SamulNori is a genre of traditional percussion music originating in Korea. Samul is referred to as "four objects" and Nori means to "play." The four objects are basically the four instruments; janggu, kkwaenggwari, buk and jing. Each of these instruments represents different weather conditions. Kkwaenggwari is for thunder, buk is for cloudy, janggu represents rain and jing is for windy. A complete entertainment package, this Korean folk genre includes acrobatics, music, dance and rituals. Since the 70s, many SamulNori bands have emerged and gained international popularity. Credited for bringing music from a rural folk genre to the modern stage, their acts are worth attending. They were founded in the late 70s by janggu player and former namsadang star performer, Kim Duk Soo. Some of the other performers that accompany him during live performances include, Lee Kwang Soo, Choi Tae Hyun and Choi Jong Sil. By the 90s, SamulNori expanded by including 20 more performers and changed its name to SamulNori Hanullim, Inc. Since then, they've been amusing the world through their theater-like performances in many huge venues of the world. Besides from giving solo performances, SamulNori has also collaborated with a number of other notable ensembles such as the Red Sun Jazz Band and the Japanese taiko group, Kodo.
