Ronny Cox was born in 1938 in New Mexico. He is the third among five siblings. He graduated in theater and speech correction from Eastern New Mexico University in 1963. It was in 1972 that his debut film Deliverance was released. He was asked to be a part of the movie because of his proficiency in playing the guitar. His instrumental Dueling Banjos in one of the scenes of the film was widely acclaimed.
After the success of Deliverance, Ronny Cox was offered more on screen jobs. Most of them were good roles and he started becoming popular in the television industry. Later during 1974-75, Cox was offered a role in a dramatic television series named Apple's Way, produced by Earl Hammer. After twelve years of the release of the movie Deliverance, Cox played a role in another film called Courage, in the year 1984. This went on to become another success for the artist.
Cox became popular for his character, Dr. John Gideon from the medical drama St. Elsewhere. He was then offered a role in the film RoboCop by Paul Verhoeven in 1987 to pay tribute to the villain, Richard Jones. He also appeared as a Los Angeles Police Chief, Roger Kendrick in the film called Cop Rock, which was released in 1990. Another movie called Total Recall, released the same year was an instant hit and Cox played the role of the Mars Administrator, Vilos Cohaagen in that movie.
In yet another exciting role, he performed as Captain Edward Jellico in the Star Trek: The Next Generation. In addition, his appearance as Henry Mason, father of Marcia Cross in Desperate Housewives was widely praised. Besides acting, Cox remained engaged as a voice-over artist as well and recorded his voice for a few films.
Ronny Cox is also a prolific singer and despite being a successful actor, he often turns down several acting offers and prefers to play music at festivals and theaters. He has released nine albums over the course of his music career. These include Ronny Cox, Acoustic Eclectricity, Cowboy Savant, Ronny Cox Live, Ronny Cox: Songs, Stories. and Out & Out Lies, Ronny Cox at the Sebastiani Theatre, How I Love Them Old Songs, Songs. with Repercussions and Ronny, Rad and Karen. His album Ronny, Rad and Karen was released in the year 2012.
As far as his personal life is concerned, he got married to Mary as a teenager and his album Ronny Cox Songs with Repercussions is based on the loss that he suffered after her death. Cox, during an interview, admitted that Mary was his only love and she meant everything to him. It won't be wrong to say that Repercussions is Cox's best and the finest work.
He tours along with his band every year to Ireland. One of the Cox's fans said that "he is an artist with outstanding knowledge and familiarity about projecting a real life in acting and music." He has spent almost four decades in writing and playing songs. He also authored a book about his film-making experience which was published in the year 2012. In this book, Cox described the techniques of film-making and acting, based on his professional career which spans over a period of forty years.
