The RockyGrass Academy, presented by Planet Bluegrass, is an opportunity for amateur and novice musicians to learn from the best in bluegrass. Events at this monumental academy range from small classes led by world famous musicians to group jamming sessions, songwriting, vocal coaching, electives and even one on one instructions. Participants can also learn fiddle tunes, how to write instrumentals, techniques on practicing, accompaniment, music history and improvisation. What's more, evenings at the academy are far different from any other academy. There are barbeques, band scrambles and loads of jamming, resulting in one of the most fun learning experiences ever.

A lot of people who have attended the RockyGrass Academy in the past have gone on to return year after year, building relationships with some of the world's best musicians. Instrument classes at the academy are led by some of the finest musicians in the world, many of them performers at the RockyGrass Festival. These world-class bluegrass musicians take out a week of their time and instruct the academy's students on how to best play their instruments. They also share their experience and lead fruitful jam sessions. There are three levels of instrument instruction for those who want to or are playing the mandolin, bass, banjo, guitar and fiddle. Additionally, an intermediate-level class is also available for instrument instruction in dobro.

Similarly, for those who want to improve their singing and songwriting, vocal and songwriting classes are offered by none other than Grammy Award winning artist, Laurie Lewis and Jon Randall. These are separate course tracks, with students able to choose whichever they prefer. But what makes the academy a sell for parents and families is the Kids Camp, where the bluegrass academy experience is shared by children through special fun programs for children aged seven to fourteen years old. For four good days, these children learn instruments and get band and vocal instructions in a more exciting way. What's more, the children then display what they have learned in a marvelous concert at the end of the Academy.

The Academy also offers a spectacular instrument building experience class, where participants learn how to build an instrument in just a week. Instrument kits allow students to use various techniques and materials, resulting in some amazing instruments. These include the mandolin family instruments with two graduates of the class being given the opportunity of building a travel guitar. To date, more than two hundred instruments have been built by students of the Academy. The best fact about this sensational class is that no experience is required to build any instrument that is a part of the mandolin family.

Academy students can also bring guests to the event, with a limited number of guest passes available. They can then camp at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch, a beautiful expanse of nature where the Academy takes place. The guests can also enroll in the several non-instrumental classes, including vocal coaching, songwriting or even instrument building.
