Robert Hunter was initially named Robert Burns. He was born on the 23rd of June, 1941. He is famous for his association with the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia. He is a longtime friend of the latter, having worked together in bluegrass groups such as Wildwood Boys, Tub Thumpers and more. Around the year 1962, Hunter volunteered along with Ken Kesey to test mind altering products at Stanford University in secret experiments sponsored by the CIA for the program called MKULTRA.
Robert Hunter began contributing lyrics to the Grateful Dead on the band's third album which was called Aoxomoxoa and was released in the year 1969. One of the most popular songs of the album was titled China Cat Sunflower. Garcia, who is one of the key members of the band Grateful Dead described Hunter as "the band member who does not come out on stage with us." When the group was admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the year 1994, Hunter was also included along with the band.
Hunter has also worked as a lyricist with other members of the Grateful Dead such as Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. In all, he has composed the lyrics of more than eighty songs for the group. In the year 1974, Hunter released a solo album called Tales of the Great Rum Runners. This album was followed the next year by another record which was titled Tiger Rose. One of his most popular records was Jack O 'Roses which also contains an extended version of the song "Terrapin Station Suite" as well as a solo performance of "Friend Of The Devil".
Robert Hunter has also collaborated with many different artists in the music industry including Bob Dylan, with whom he worked for his album which was released in the year 2009 under the title of Together Through Life. One of the most famous songs of the Grateful Dead has also been composed by Hunter. It was titled Dark Star and it went on to become one of the five hundred most important songs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The majority of the songs of the Grateful Dead are due to the collaboration between Garcia and Hunter.
One of the highlights of his career occurred in the 1970s when he composed the lyrics for the track Help on the Way / Franklin's Tower which was released in the year 1975 and Terrapin Station which was released in 1977. Besides his work as a songwriter and singer, Robert Hunter also writes poetry and works, some of which include translations of Rainer Maria Rilke's Duino Elegies and his Sonnets to Orpheus.
Some of his most famous albums include Promontory Rider: A Retrospective, which was released in the year 1982; Flight Of The Marie Helena, which was released in 1985; Alligator Moon, released in 1978; Tales Of The Great Rum Runners, released in 1974 and various more as well.
