Rihanna
The second artist, and first female, from Barbados to have received a Grammy Award, Rihanna is a Barbadian singer, model and fashion designer. Rihanna was born on February 20 in 1988 in Saint Michael, to Ronald Fenty and Monica Fenty.

She came to fame in 2005 with the release of her debut album called "Music of the Sun". Rihanna is the female solo artist with the most number ones in this decade, selling over 11 million albums worldwide.

She is currently signed to the Def Jam Recordings label. She cites Brandy, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Bob Marley and her Caribbean background as major musical influences.

Rihanna, so far, has attained five Billboard Hot 100 number ones including "SOS", "Umbrella", "Take a Bow", "Disturbia" and "Live Your Life". The album that broke the doors down for her was her debut album, entitled Music of the Sun. released in 2005, the album featured Rihanna"s breakthrough single "Pon de Replay".

In less than a year, she issued "A Girl Like Me" and gave her first number one single, "SOS". She released her full-length third studio album "Good Girl Gone Bad" in 2007. The album has spawned six hit singles including three worldwide number one singles. These included "Umbrella", "Don't Stop the Music" and "Take a Bow".

Rihanna went to Charles F. Broome Memorial School, a primary school in Barbados, and then on to the Combermere School. It is this school where she formed a musical trio with two of her classmates. In 2003, at the ripe age of 15, Rihanna received her big break when one of her friends introduced her to record producer Evan Rogers.

Rogers, vacationing in Barbados with his wife, helped Rihanna record material in the U.S. which was sent to various recording labels. One copy of her work was sent to Jay-Z, who eventually signed her to Def Jam Recordings. The following year, Rihanna won the Miss Combermere Beauty Pageant. The year 2004 also saw Rihanna performing in the Colours of Combermere School Show.

Rihanna came up with her debut album, Music of the Sun, on August 30, 2005. The album spawned a hit single "Pon de Replay" on August 22, 2005. The song turned out to be a huge success and peaked at number 2 in the US on Billboard Hot 100 charts. Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers-written-Pon de Replay also became a global hit where it peaked within the top 10 across 15 countries.

Since its release, the album reached the top 10 in both US and Canadian charts, gaining gold certification from the RIAA. Despite not having huge promotion and limited release of singles, Music of the Sun managed to sell over 500,000 copies in the United States and 2 million worldwide. Since the release of her debut album, she has amassed eleven top 40 hit singles in the U.S.

Music of the Sun spawned second single, "If It's Lovin' That You Want", though less successful than the earlier one. But, in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand the track proved to be well-received reaching the top 10 in those countries. In April 2006, Rihanna appeared with her second album, called A Girl Like Me. the album"s sales were significantly stronger, selling over 1 million in the U.S and over 3.5 million worldwide.

A Girl Like Me"s lead single, "SOS" became Rihanna's first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was also used in an endorsement deal with Nike. "SOS" peaked at number one in Australia and number two in the UK. The album"s second single, "Unfaithful" became her third top ten hit in the U.S. and in the UK.

Around this time, Rihanna also made her acting debut in a cameo role in Bring It On: All or Nothing, which was released on August 8, 2006. The following, she came up with her third full-length studio album called Good Girl Gone Bad.

The record so far has yielded eight hit singles, including the world-wide number one hit "Umbrella". The single featured Jay-Z and was the number one single in the UK for 10 consecutive weeks. This made Umbrella the longest running UK number one single since Wet Wet Wet's single "Love Is All Around", back in 1994. It is also the longest running number one by a female artist since Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You".

"Umbrella" was ranked second on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart in the United States by the end of 2007. Rihanna"s other singles, "Shut Up and Drive" and "Don't Stop The Music" were able to receive the same success as that of "Umbrella".

The single"Don't Stop the Music" reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Rihanna's seventh top ten single and her fourth top five hit. The album yielded another single entitled "Hate That I Love You", featuring Ne-Yo.

The track was able to peak at number seven in the U.S. In support of the album, Rihanna set out on the toured Canada and the United States on September 12, 2007. She performed at several shows and then crossed to Europe.

Rihanna"s tour, in support of Good Girl Gone Bad, was called the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour, and was released on DVD on June 17, 2008. DVD featured the show performed at the Manchester Evening News Arena on December 6, 2007. Rihanna re-issued her third album, titled Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded on June 17, 2008.

This year she released the singles "If I Never See Your Face Again", "Disturbia" and "Take a Bow", the latter became a worldwide number-one hit. Take a Bow is a duet with Maroon 5 while the Disturbia also peaked at the number-one spot on the Hot 100 chart, giving Rihanna her fourth number-one singles.
