Travelling across the world, shifting form continent to continent, Playing For Change, today, has more than a 100 family members from all walks of life. Now, a new addition to this movement includes the formation of the Playing For Change band. Now, the band is geared up to rock the U.S. nation, as they are all set for their special live tour around the country. Songs from an array of ethnicities, from the blues to traditional African folk music, can all be heard and experienced live! The Playing For Change multimedia music project took shape in 2004, in order to bring together different musicians from around the world. The creators and producers behind this include Mark Johnson and Enzo Buono, along with their Timeless Media Group. The self described goal of the organization is to "inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music". Together, Mark Johnson and Enzo Buono, using a mobile recording studio,have travelled across the globe to places like South Africa, Ireland, the Middle East, New Orleans, Barcelona, India, and Nepal. At each stop, they made the local musicians perform the same song, deciphered in to their own manner. Thus, the first single of the project, Stand by Me, commenced with a Roger Ridley, who was a Santa Monica street performer, and is now deceased. As the team continued its journey of travelling around the world, more musicians became a part of the project and added their versions of the song, which then were mixed together to produce the final version, which scored 15 million hits on the internet (YouTube). As the project grew, more songs and videos got recorded. Artists that are participating and candidly involved in the Playing For Change project, comprise Louis Mhlanga, Tal Ben Ari "Tula", Vu'si Mahlasela, Grandpa Elliott, Clarence Bekker, Bono, Keb' Mo', and Manu Chao.
In addition, Playing For Change has created the Playing for Change Foundation (2007) that helped collect donations and organize benefit concerts, which provide the musicians and the communities with art schools and music. The foundation has also built many music schools for children across the globe, such as in Nepal, Guguletu, South Africa, etc.
The organization now comprises of its own musical band - Playing For Change. The present band members include Clarence Bekker lead vocalist, Grandpa Elliott lead vocalist, and also plays the harmonica, Tal Ben Ari "Tula" lead vocalist, Mermans Kenkosenki lead vocalist, and plays the congas, Louis Mhlanga electric guitarist, Jason Tamba backup vocalist, and also plays the acoustic guitars, Reggie McBride backup vocalist, and the bassist, Peter Bunetta - on the drum kit and Mohammed Alidu - on the talking drum, djembe.
The band's music is considered to be straight from the soul, and is described as uninhibited, raw, natural and organic. They play world music, and sing from a variety of traditions that range from the blues to traditional African folk music. These musicians cover some Bob Marley classics such as One Love and War, and No More Trouble. Playing For Change travels around the planet earth, and is highly praised and critically acclaimed for its soulful performances that completely grabs the audience's attention, making them swing on the melodic tunes. It is almost like some magical spell has been casted on the audience by the band. The band has generated a huge fan following and base in different parts of the world, who just want and more of these various multitalented artists!
Most recently, the band released its first original song, Don't Worry, which has been sung by Pierre Minetti. It was released in Barcelona, Spain, and the video of the song features more than twenty musicians on four continents; whereas, additional episodes include live performances of the Playing for Change band.
Now, Playing For Change band can be seen live in a concert, as the band will soon be hitting the road for a very special tour around the nation.
