The musical extravaganza is organized by the internet publication company Pitchfork Media. The company played a major role in managing the first ever Intonation Festival which was held at the same venue in 2005.  Returning for the next year the company organized the festival under its present name. Starting as a two day event the festival attracted an audience exceeding thirty five thousand in number. Presently Pitchfork Music Festival spreads over three days.

Starting with around forty participating bands the festival has grown to include over seventy acts. Previously the event has also included standup comedy sessions but at present the event is  limited to musical performances. These are held at several stages and tents. The most sought after event of the festival is the performance on the final day which sees mega artists take to the main stage for the finale.

A large number of acts from different genres perform at the festival. Rock acts like TV on the Radio, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Broken Social Scene have entertained audiences at the event. Also included in the festival have been jazz acts like Craig Taborn, Ken Vandermark and Chicago Underground Duo. The featured acts also include various other genres like noise pop, folk, space rock, pop, R & B and much more.

In the past the festival has been graced by mega musical personalities. Rappers A$AP Rocky and Dizzee Rascal are among the artists who have taken to stage at the event. The Polaris Music Prize winning violinist Owen Pallett has also performed at the festival. Pitchfork Music Festival has also collaborated with the British promoters All Tomorrow's Parties to bring the international concert series 'Don't Look Back' to the festival.
