Little did he know that the music he composed for pleasure will boost his career, as he himself comments: "Yizo Yizo gave me exposure. Through that, I started working with other industry players who gave me a profile."
Philip Miller has composed music for many local and international films, working with eminent filmmakers. He is particularly renowned for his work in Catch a Fire, which was released in 2006, The Bang Bang Club, which was released in 2010 and the BAFTA Award winning film The Girl. He also received the 2013 Emmy Award nomination for "Best Original Dramatic Score" for his work in The Girl. Some more scores by him include for films like Black Butterflies, which was awarded "Best Film Score" at the SAFTA Awards, Martha and Mary and BBC's The Borrowers.
Most of Miller's acclaimed work has been in collaboration with South Africa's eminent artist, William Kentridge. Not only has he composed music for Kentridge's animated films, but the two have also worked on theatrical productions. These include productions like Magic Flute. In 2000, Miller released an album which was titled, The Music for the Films of William Kentridge. The album has been one of the most successful tour records by the artist. It includes the hits "Journey to the Moon", "Prologue" and "Monument."
The Refusal of Time is another successful tour album by the artist. It includes scores like "Metronome", "Counting Time" and "Black Hole." "..all enhanced by Philip Miller's score of menacing tuba drones, breathing sounds, ululation and what resembles an army of madly hammering Nibelungs," said a review on his music composition for the film. The project has received a lot of acclaim in London.
Rewind: A Cantata for Voice, Tape and Testimony is another project by Miller. The songs are based on the traditional South African style, which describe the South Afriscan spirit during the 1996 Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings. The New York Times reviewed the project as 'Ambitious.. Provocative.'
Miller's compositions are renowned worldwide and have been performed in places like London, New York and Australia. According to the artist, the music that is being composed for a particular film, television series or documentary should complement the visuals that appear before the viewers. This knowledge, as he says, can only be gained by watching films and understanding the basic idea of it. Once the person is familiar with the theme of a particular movie, only then music can be created that will suit it. Adding versatility to music compositions is another thing that the artist suggests.
Philip Miller's projects also include various albums dedicated to the traditional South African lullabies and The Thula project. He has also composed music for many television series, which include Zero Tolerance, Crossing the Line and Zone 14.
