Osvaldo Golijov is a Grammy Award winning classical music composer from Argentina who has been active in the world of music since the eighties, composing some of the most sensational pieces of classical music. Osvaldo Golijov was born in La Plata, Argentina, where he grew up. At a young age, he learned traditional Klezmer music from his parents. While studying in the Argentine public school system, he was influenced by many different styles from tango to classical. He studied the piano at the La Plata conservatory of music and then learned music composition from Gerardo Gandini. During the eighties, he moved to Israel where he studied at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy under Mark Kopytman. After that, he moved to the US with his family where he studied music at the University of Pennsylvania under George Crumb, eventually graduating with a PhD.
Osvaldo Golijov then began his career as a composer of classical music. He went on to win a large number of awards and honors, including the Vilcek Prize and the MacArthur Fellowship. He has since then collaborated and worked with artists and conductors such as Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Luciana Souza, Biella de Costa, Yo-Yo Ma, Maya Beiser, Alisa Weilerstein, Matt Haimovitz, Kayhan Kalhor and Jamey Haddad, to name but a few vocalists, cellists, virtuosos and percussionists. He has also worked with some of the biggest symphonies, orchestras and groups.
Osvaldo Golijov has worked with the Atlanta Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Eighth Blackbird, the Silk Road Ensemble, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony. He has also worked with famous playwright David Henry Hwang, director Francis Ford Coppola and director Peter Sellars. He has been the composer in residence of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for their Music Alive series, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Marlboro Music School, the Spoleto Festival and the Ravinia Festival.
In 2010 alone, Osvaldo Golijov was commissioned to compose music for thirty five US orchestras, such as pieces honoring famous astronomer Galileo. He is the College of the Holy Cross's Loyola Professor of Music and is also on the Boston Conservatory's faculty.
He has also written pieces in commemoration of Johann Sebastian Bach for the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart, for the Oregon Bach Festival. He has also composed music for the Santa Fe Opera Festival, the Barbican Arts Centre in London, the Opera Boston, the soundtrack of the movie The Man Who Cried, and music for three Francis Ford Coppola movies; Twixt, Tetro and Youth Without Youth. He received two Grammy Awards in 2007 for the Best Classical Contemporary Composition and the Best Opera Recording. His discography is home to twenty records and he has composed music for six movies.
