In 1926, the inaugural event was organized at the Los Angeles Country Club and in 1927 it once again moved to play at the Wilshire Country Club.  From 1931-33, the event's home was the Hillcrest Country Club and the following year it was again Los Angeles where the event was played for next three years.  In the1938 event of Open Trust, Babe Zaharias played who was later recognized as the first women to play in any professional golf tournament.
 
Beginning its relationship with the Riviera Country Club in 1973, the event has always been held here except for two years, 1983 and 1998. In 1983 and 1998 it was contested at Rancho Park Golf Course and Valencia Country Club respectively. Apart from the Northern Trust Open, Riviera Country Club has also hosted some major golf championships including those of US Open1948, US Senior Open in1998 and PGA Championships of 1995 & 1983. Stretching over seven thousand yards and having a slope rating of hundred and thirty-seven, this golf course was designed by George C. Thomas. Leading the ranking with the scores of two hundred and seventy seven points, last year's championship was held by Bill Hass. Every year, Northern Trust Open attracts the best professional golfers from around the world who come from Scotland, England, Australia, Korea, Canada, Japan and the United States.
