Night of the Proms was created in 1984 by two Belgian students, Jan Van Esbroeck and Jan Vereecke. Based on the English concert 'Last Night of the Proms' the two boys decided to organize an event called "First Night of the Proms". An evening with only classical music performances might not have been very popular with the audiences, so Jan and Jan also added a section of pop music in the program. Though no one could have predicted it, the first ever event of Night of the Proms saw 13,500 people turning up for the concert, including many non-students.

The concert was not just a commercial success but it also received a lot of critical acclaim. Press and audiences reacted so positively that the Belgian students decided to continue their endeavor. In five years time, the Night of the Proms had gained enough popularity to be taken to an international scale. Holland received the series of concerts for the first time in 1990. Germany was the second in line to host the event in 1994. France, Switzerland, Denmark and Austria also followed suit. Over the years, the Night of the Proms has developed into an all-singing, all-dancing celebration of pop and classical music.

The five-time Grammy Award winner and soft-rock musician Michael McDonald is renowned for his soulful baritone. The Pointer sisters are one of the most successful R&B girl groups in history and the guitar skills of Kenny Loggins are unmatched. Nile Rodgers with the band Chic will be another addition to the splendid lineup of performers.
