Neutral Milk Hotel is one of the most distinctive bands to have hit the indie rock scene. Rising to fame in the 1990s, this four member group was formed by Louisiana based singer/songwriter Jeff Mangum. Post the release of their debut album On Avery Island, the band began performing endlessly. Selling around 5000 copies, the album did a fairly good job landing them an opportunity to work with Scott Spillane, Jeremy Barnes and Julian Koster. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, the 1998 release was a bigger and better production as it amassed rave reviews from Allmusic, Magnet Magazine, Pitchfork Media and the Pazz & Jop Poll. Not only that, the album also turned out to be one of the most compelling albums of 1990s. Hence selling more than 140,000 copies. Since the band will take the stage after a long hiatus buy Neutral Milk Hotel tickets to watch them perform live.
On Avery Island hit the shelves in 1996 officially putting Neutral Milk Hotel on the map. Incorporating a wide spectrum of genres such as indie rock, prog/rock, indie pop, lo-fi, neo-psychedelia and psych folk in the music, the album was released in the United States and UK. It acquired a positive response from Allmusic, NME, Ultimate Guitar, Twisted Ear and Skinny Mag. Hence delivering a number of hits like You've Passed, Where You'll Find Me Now, Someone is Waiting, Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone etc.
The second album again made an impact on the music critics for its instrumentation and lyrics. It received critical acclaim from Sputnickmusic, Tiny Mix Tapes, Allmusic, About.com, Pitchfork Media, Robert Christgau and Rollingstone. It landed at number one in the Magnet magazine's list of Top 60 Albums. According to Blender magazine the album ended up at number 32 on 100 Greatest Indie rock Albums Ever.
On the other hand College Music Journal referred to it as "a true lo-fi pop landmark". In other words it was a revolutionary album that sparked frenzy among the critics. Two-Headed Boy, Holland 1945, Communist Daughter and The Fool are some of the songs from the album. Before the hiatus Mangum put up two shows where he performed some of his standout songs; Little Birds, Oh Sister, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and Engine. He was also seen performing with The Instruments, Chris Knox while also playing cover songs by John Lennon and Phil Spector. He also released a recording of Bulgarian Folk Festival under the title Orange Twin Field Works.
In 2010, Mangum performed live at a benefit concert in Manhattan. He again made an appearance at an intimate gathering of 100 guests in Brooklyn. In 2011 In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was included in Q magazine's list of Top 250 Albums of the Past 25 Years.
The same year an EP was also released by the name of Ferris Wheel on Fire consisting of the songs My Dreamgirl Don't Exist, I will Bury You in Time, A Baby for Pree/Glow into You and others. 2011 saw the launch of the website walkingwallofwords.com where he provided the fans with an opportunity to come across unreleased tracks, radio show and drawings. In their short rather impressive career the band has inspired many. Its unique sound has had a profound influence on others including Arcade, Bon Iver, Franz Ferdinand, The Decemberists and Beirut. Moreover, Brand New, Matt Pond PA, The Dresden Dolls, The Mountain Goats, Kevin Devine, Andrew Jackson Jihad and The Flowers of Hell are among the artists who have covered Neutral Milk Hotel's songs Two Headed Boy, Oh Comely, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, Holland 1945 and Avery Island/April 1st.
