The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in early eighties. It made its debut appearance in 1982 by performing in churches on Marco Island and at the Naples High School auditorium. In 1989, Philharmonic Center for the Arts was opened and from then, the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra really started its successful run in live music world.
The 100-voice Philharmonic Center Chorale was founded in 1991 and the Philharmonic Youth Chorale was established in 1998. In 2002, the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra was formed that further expanded the circle of Naples territory.
Today, it has grown into an internationally recognized ensemble with musicians from all regions of the United States and from Europe, China and Russia. It also presents an extensive series of educational programs each season that teaches music to children of all ages.
The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra is recognized as one of the top regional orchestras in the United States. The ensemble employs 49 full-time resident musicians and many other guest musicians.
Besides being a hugely popular among the theatergoers of America, the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra is also critically acclaimed as South Floridas premier professional orchestra. It performs more than 150 concerts every year. These include classical, pops, ballet, chamber music and family programs.
Over the years, the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra has worked under the guidance of best conductors of the music world. The recent one being the dynamic conductor Jorge Mester, who debuted as the orchestras new music director in 2004.
The orchestra has also released CDs of its work including the Grammy nominated recording of The Manhattan Transfer Meets Tubby the Tuba on Summit Records. It also released Telarc recording of concerts by Rodrigo, conducted by Erich Kunzel and featuring guitarist David Russell.
In addition to this, it has many international recording credits that two PBS television specials and Fiesta at the Philharmonic, conducted by Kunzel and showcasing Grammy Award-winning flutist Nestor Torres besides many other national and international television airtimes.
The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra plays regular classical, pops and chamber concerts throughout the year. It accompanies Edward Villellas Miami City Ballet each season for George Balanchines The Nutcracker and the ballets repertoire series, traditionally performed in January, February and March.
In recent years, it has been invited to accompany renowned artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Kiri Te Kanawa, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and the Monte Carlo Ballet. It has also performed with Denyce Graves, Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Stade.
