Founded in 2000 by Moscow City Government, Moscow City Symphony Russian Philharmonic is the first and only Moscow City Full symphony Orchestra. Orchestra's first artistic director and chief conductor Alexander Vedernikov who served till 2004, followed by Maxim Fedotov till 2011 and Dmitri Jurowski after that. Orchestra's concerts take place in Grand Hall of the Conservatory, Svetlanov Hall of Moscow International House of Music, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and State Kremlin Palace. The orchestra includes a chamber orchestra, smaller symphony orchestra, string ensemble, brass band and chamber groups.
Moscow City Symphony has been playing a significant role in turning Moscow into cultural capital of the world. With more than 80 concerts per season just in Moscow and many more all around the world, it has solidified its status as the orchestra of new millennium. The repertoire includes Russian classics, foreign classics and several works of modern composers.
Prominent soloists and conductors are part of the symphony orchestra which includes Honored Artists of Russia, Western Europe and Asia many of whom are International Awards winners. These musicians have represented Russia in Asia Pacific United Symphony Orchestra at General Assembly Hall in New York and All Stars Orchestra at Arena di Verona. The symphony orchestra is also a member of International Artist Managers' Association, League of American Orchestras and Alliance of Asia Pacific Region Orchestras, the only Russian Orchestra to do so.
Over the years, Moscow City Symphony has been implementing grand innovative projects. These include The Golden Cockerel with cinema and theatre collaboration, Fairy Tale about Tsar Saltan and several other Russian music tales. Other projects include G. Verdi's Aida, Carmina Burana, Ancient Egyptian opera recital, C. Orff's Cantata using masterpieces of Michelangelo, Bruegel, Botticelli, Bosch, Raphael and Durer. The CD recordings include modern compositions as well as symphonic works.
The Symphony has presented many remarkable and world renowned projects which include premiere of A. Schoenberg's cantata Gurre-Leider, joint concert with La Scala orchestra, world premiere of Glory, Russian premiere of G. Rossini's Tancredi. The orchestra also arranged two concerts with orchestra of Julia Chapel, St Peter's Basilica. The orchestra also takes part in annual City Day and the Victory Day celebration, International Bach Music Festival, International Russian Opera Festival, International opera Singers Competitions and annual Mstislav Rostropovick International Festival. It also hosted eighth Alliance of Asia Pacific Region Orchestras (AAPRO) Summit at the Moscow International House of Music.
