Money Mark
Money Mark is a producer and musician who has collaborated with the Beastie Boys many times. Most of his work is underground. He also appears on the first Banyan album as the Freeway Keyboardist.
Performing Chicken is an EP by Money Mark released on the Fido Speaks label in 1994. The tracks on this release also comprise the first portion of his later album, Marks Keyboard Repair.
Marks Keyboard Repair is an album by Money Mark released on the Mo Wax label released in 1995. The album is a series of low key keyboard-driven lounge and funk songs. Mark only sings on a few of the records.
The music has a demo-ish quality which is matched by Marks use of vintage keyboards and beatbox-like drum loops. Cry and Insects Are All Around Us was released as a single and reached #140 on the UK singles chart.
UK versions do not include the songs from the Third Version EP. The album reached #35 on the UK albums chart in September 1995. Cry was again released as a single in August of that year and reached a more respectable #86.
It was then also remixed by the Dust Brothers and included as a b-side of the Hand in My Head single. The full length version is actually a composite of the Performing Chicken EP, with the additional tracks from the UK release of Marks Keyboard Repair, and the tracks from the Third Version EP.
Whereas his 1996 EP was similar to his debut, Push the Button was extremely eclectic, combining aspects of Rock music and Pop with Soul, Funk and Hip-Hop. Sometimes You Gotta Make It Alone was rerecorded in 1996 for the Third Version EP, the new version displayed a new confident direction.
Got My Hand in Your Head was rerecorded as Hand in Your Head for Money Marks second full length album, Push the Button. It was released as a single and reached #40 in the UK in February 1998.
The vocals were cleaner and fuller in the mix. This pop approach was developed further on Push the Button. Push the Button is an album by Money Mark. Hand in Your Head and Maybe I'm Dead were released as singles.
The first single was Pick Up The Pieces, which was co-written by Jack Johnson. The downbeat nature of the lyrics about a failed relationship saw comparisons by critics to Becks 2002 album Sea Change.
