Mint Condition is one of the most recognized R&B bands in the US. Formed in the '80s, the band has garnered a loyal fan following ranging from jazz listeners to R&B enthusiasts. The quintet has been active since the release of their debut album in 1991. Their live performances have received widespread critical acclaim for their diversity, crowd energy and the skills of the musicians. Their most successful era was the '90s, where they released some of their most well known works. Mint Condition released their latest album in 2012, and are now touring for the album's promotion. The Music @ the Speed of Life Tour is stretched over many major cities in North America.
The band consists of the five members; Stokley Williams, Ricky Kinchen, Homer O'Dell, Larry Waddell and Jeffrey Allen. Stokey Williams is the lead singer and front man for the band, Kinchen is the bassist, O'Dell is the lead guitarist, Waddell is the keyboardist and Allen specializes in saxophone and keyboards.
The band's music style differs from track to track and from album to album. A mash up of five talented musicians, Mint Condition has always experimented through different genres. Each member brought his unique talent, influences and experiences into the fray. That much is evident in the band's music. Their repertoire includes everything from traditional jazz to conventional R&B and from funk groove to rock elements and world music elements like Jamaican and Latin based rhythms.
Meant to Be Mint, their debut album, charted at number four on the Top Heatseekers chart, and peaked in the Top 20 on the Top R&B Albums chart. The album's second single "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)" debuted at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is Mint Condition's best hit to date and is associated as their signature song.
Their next two albums From the Mint Factory and Definition of a Band produced the hit singles "U Send Me Swingin'" and "What Kind Of Man Would I Be?" The latter reached number two on the R&B chart and received a gold certification.
Their next album Life's Aquarium was released in 1999 and was the last album of their debuting decade. Stepping into the next century, the quintet released two albums in the first ten years and two in the second. The 2011 album 7.was a milestone, as it marked their twentieth anniversary. The band celebrated it by joining the legendary artist Prince on his Welcome 2 America Tour. During those years, they garnered nationwide media attention by featuring in two TV One programs; Way Black When and Unsung.
Since their debut, Mint Condition has won numerous awards and accolades. In 1997, they earned their first nominations at the Soul Train Music Awards for their single "What Kind Of Man Would I Be" and for their album Definition of a Band. Eight years later, they were again nominated for their album Livin' the Luxury Brown. They have won three SoulTracks Reader's Choice Awards including two 'Duo or Group of the Year' awards in 2008 and 2011. Their name was inducted into the SoulMusic Hall of Fame by SoulMusic.com in 2012.
Mint Condition has established itself as one of the best R&B band by releasing charting singles and albums through the years. Their eighth studio album Music @the Speed of Life was released in 2012 and charted in the top ten on Billboard's R&B Albums. The album features guest appearances by hip hop legend DJ Jazzy Jeff, Brother Ali and Prince's saxophonist Eric Leeds. The album contains singles such as "Believe in Us," "Slo Woman" and "Girl of My Life."
