Mickey Hart's father was a brilliant drummer as well and that is what made him fall in love with drums. Hart used to help his father run their store that sold music instruments. He started off playing on a small scale but it wasn't long before his talents were noticed by the people running "Grateful Dead."
It was in the year 1967 that Mickey Hart joined the legendary group. The group was two years old by then but was still trying to find its feet in the world of music. Hart was a raw young drummer during those days but the talent was there for everyone to see. With Hart in their ranks the Grateful Dead began to churn out one hit after another.
Bill Kreutzmann was the other drummer of the group apart from Hart. The two hit off straight away and their performances in tandem gave them the moniker 'The Rhythm Devils." The first Grateful Dead album Hart worked on was the epic "Anthem of the Sun." It came out on 18th July, 1967 and turned out to be a big hit. The album was ranked among the best five hundred albums of all time on the list compiled by Rolling Stone. "Aoxomoxoa" then hit the music stores in the year 1969 and has since gone on to be certified gold by the RIAA. "Live/Dead" was then released and it received widespread acclaim from every corner as well. That was followed by another successful release titled "Workingman's Dead" in 1970. Hart's last album with the Grateful Dead was "American Beauty" which was released on 1st November, 1970.
After a successful stint that lasted for half a decade, Mickey Hart left the group and embarked on a new journey as a solo performer. Hart made his solo debut in the year 1972 with album "Rolling Thunder." It got four stars out of five from renowned critics like "Allmusic." Two years later Hart once again went back and re-joined the Grateful Dead and that remained the case till the group officially stopped performing in the year 1995.
Even during his second stint the the group Hart continued to work on different projects as a soloist. He has been actively pursuing his love with world music as well. He has teamed up with dome of the most famous names in music from all over the globe to work on different projects.
"Planet Earth," the 1991 album produced by Hart was an epic success. It went to the top of the Billboard World Music Chart in no time and remained at the pinnacle for a whopping twenty six weeks straight. Not only that, but the album wrote its name in history books by becoming the first album in history to win the prestigious Grammy in the category of the Best World Music Album. Hart then went on to form the Mickey Hart Band with David Schools, Crystal Monee Hall, Ian Herman, Gawain Matthews, Ben Yonas, Sikiru Adepoju and Joe Bagale. They have been on a roll and together they have taken world music to a different level altogether.
