King of pop, and a living legend, Michael Jackson is still on the top of his game after four decades. His music has influenced and inspired the generations of his time and of today. A child prodigy, Michael started singing with his brothers at the age of 5. Soon, he became the dominant voice and focus of The Jackson 5 due to his vocals that showed a maturity beyond his years. At the dawn of the 70s, the 70s, the brothers were one of the most accomplished pop/soul groups in music industry. As the time passed, they evolved into a disco phenomenon toping charts with back-to-back hits.

Michael Jackson's solo in 1972 called Ben - title song from a children's thriller - earned an Oscar nomination. Then another attempt at a solo was the ballad 'Got to Be There', an instant hit on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1977 he also starred in the film musical 'The Wiz', collaborating with Quincy Jones on the soundtrack album. All this paved the way for his solo career resulting in a record deal in 1978 and the release of his debut album, 'Off The Wall,' in 1979 produced by Quincy Jones. A set of funky disco-pop, it went platinum, and topped the charts in the UK and USA. To-date it has sold over 20 million copies with classic singles like 'Rock with You' and 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough'. It was the defining period for Michael from a child star to the multi-millionaire star. All through that he also kept his deal with his brothers' group for nine more years, and then came the biggest-selling album of all time, Thriller, the breakthrough to absolute stardom worldwide. He won a handful of awards, including eight Grammys in one night, and also signed the largest deal ever by becoming a spokesman for Pepsi. Billie Jeans, Beat It, That Girl is Mine were some of the hit singles in that album supported with creatively conceived video clips giving them an amazing staying power. MTV played these videos for a long time, garnering immense publicity for Michael. His music, dance style and music videos became an art form. Many were seen with a single white-sequined glove like him, and almost every young person tried to copy his signature moves - the leg twist/kick, the moon walk, etc. Going from one mega-stadium to the other, his live performances became frequent and were always electric and entertaining. Michael Jackson even had (still has) international influence and position. A person from a small community in Norway, and one from Africa, both were sure to be familiar with his name and his music. People from around the world were mesmerized by him. Michael rejoined his brothers one last time in 1984 for the album Victory. The supporting tour for this album was one of the biggest of the year. The next year, he co-wrote the hit anthem We Are the World with Lionel Richie. It was for the all-star famine-relief champagne called USA for Africa. Michael Jackson was also involved in other humanitarian efforts. In 1991 he released yet another hit album called Dangerous which was produced by Teddy Riley. Although the lead track, Black or White, shot to the top, Michael was criticized for the display of violence at the end of its video.

The 90s however was a period that was to have numerous twists and turns. While his solo success was at its peak, media speculations started erupting regarding his personal life and his various eccentricities. He became a recluse preferring the company of animals, toys and young children whom he frequently invited to stay on his ranch Neverland. Then in 1993, parents of a 13-year-old boy who'd become a frequent guest at Neverland accused Michael of molesting him. Prior to that, he had also been to a rehab for the treatment for his addiction to pain killers. Hence after these incidents, two failed marriages, two kids and a couple of albums that didn't make an impact, things finally got a little better with 'Invincible' in 2001. It sold nearly 8 million copies all over the world with hits like, 'You Rock my World'.

Despite the numerous allegations, settlements and acquittals, the fact is that Michael Jackson is still a hot favorite of media. Over the four decades he has had an indisputable impact upon the music industry. Today at forty nine, with the same energy, amazing voice and an enormous die-hard fan base, Michael Jackson's still got it all.
