Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan is basically a music group from Mexico and it plays Gaspar Vargas's original form of Mariachi music. Since 1975 and since then the music direction of the ensemble is carried out by Don Jose "Pepe" Martinez. The ensemble has a generations old tradition that spreads over to five generations. Each generation has made interesting additions to the group and has added to its development consequently. The group consisted of five members at that time which also included his son Silvestre Vargas, who joined the group in 1926. The second generation of Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan began its journey in 1931 when Gaspar Vargas handed over the responsibility of the group to his son. The ambitious Silvestre who dreamt of the ensemble becoming one of the leading Mariachi of Mexico initially expanded the strength of the group to eight musicians. The ensemble participated and won a number of contests in cities like Guadalajara and Mexico City. They got the honour of becoming the official Mariachi of the Police Department their and got settled in Mexico for twenty years exhibiting their talent every now and then.
Before the third generation of the group had started playing in 1950, Fuentes, a classical violin player had joined the group. Both he and Silvestre added trumpet to the group and made some changes to the group's sound and entire outlook. The next forty years of the ensemble saw some enriched changes and some unique and diverse recordings. The famous "Golden Age of Huapangos" was also recorded during this era. Fuentes assumed the responsibility solely as a music director of Vargas De Tecalitlan. Under his direction, the band not only became widely acclaimed as an outstanding classical mariachi group but also the doors of diversity and international fame opened for them.
