Maria started singing professionally when she was twenty four and released her first self-titled CD in 2003. She sold more than a million units all over the world. The album went Platinum and was an international hit, making Maria a global star. It spawned hits like "The Party", "Meetings and Farewells", "Little Girl of the Gate" and "Brave Face". In 2005, Maria released "Segundo", which earned her two Latin Grammys. With the release of "Samba Meu" in 2007, Maria became the recipient of another Latin Grammy and on popular demand toured extensively for a couple of years. Maria paid tribute to Elis Regina by releasing "Redescobrir" on the thirtieth anniversary of her passing and supported it by live concerts. In an interview Maria Rita stated that the project was started to address her mother's iconic presence in music. Maria sounds a lot like her mother and has been highly appreciated for her terrific vocals. Maria has developed a jazzy vocal style of her own, with singers such as Ella Fitzgerald as her influence. Currently Maria Rita is celebrating the success of the tribute album and is getting ready for her "Voice & Piano" tour with Tiago Costa.
Keeping things fresh in her upcoming concerts, Maria will be playing songs from her various albums, some songs that she has not even recorded as yet as well as numbers from "Redescobrir". Maria will also be performing hit numbers by Elis Regina.
