Canadian Christian rock star Marc Martel is known for his impressive voice and his striking vocal resemblance to Queen's Freddie Mercury. Martel has made his own music and with his band too but the fame he found with Queen's catalog has been unprecedented.
The talented musician was brought up in a music friendly environment. From early childhood the gifted vocalist developed an interest in music. In 1999, still in his college years, Martel got together with Jason Germain his roommate and some friends to make a band called Downhere. The singer says the group's friendship revolved around music. They had the same tastes and love for music yet they all brought their own influences.
Downhere
The rock band initially toured for the college but soon signed a record deal and moved to Nashville. They released ten studio albums and found international success. The group won several Juno Awards and a Dove Award. Marc recorded and toured with his contemporary Christian band for more than a dozen years across American States, as well as Europe and even Northern Africa before they went on hiatus on January 1, 2013.
Marc and Freddie Mercury
Marc was always compared to the late Freddie Mercury, the iconic singer of the rock band Queen. During his time with Downhere also the Canadian-born singer was often approached by fans who commented incessantly on how he sounded exactly like him. According to the singer when he was with the band he did everything he could not to remind people of Freddie. He spent thirteen years as a vocalist of the Canadian rock band but the fame he found as the voice of The Queen Extravaganza took him to places.
How it All Started
Martel received an invitation to participate in a contest led by the actual members of Queen. Initially, Martel didn't take it seriously but was encouraged by family and friends to give it a try. On a whim he cut a version of "Somebody To Love."
Little did he know that it would make him a YouTube sensation and land him an appearance on the "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." During the auditions when Roger Taylor listened to him belt out a few notes it stopped him in his tracks. Queen drummer Roger Taylor told the Daily Record: "That voice. You listen, close your eyes and you think it's Freddie. It's really uncanny." He was the winner of the competition that took him to one and a half month long tour with The Queen Extravaganza in 2012. He stayed with The Queen Extravaganza till 2016.
Solo Work
After leaving Downhere, Martel didn't give up on his own music but continued to release albums. Martel released an EP Prelude on February 1, 2013. The singer went solo trying to make his own identity and on September 30, 2014 dropped his first full-length solo album, Impersonator.
In 2017, Martel created his own Queen Tribute band - The Ultimate Queen Celebration. The extravaganza is a fitting tribute for a great artist like Freddie Mercury. It includes Queen's rock anthems of all time along with a theatrical performance style production. The singer says the Queen catalog has made him a better singer. If you want to listen to his original work or relive the magic of Queen's timeless classics Marc Martel tickets is the answer.
