The Julliard String Quartet is an American classical music string quartet that was founded back in 1946 at New York City's Juilliard School. The original members of the group were cellist Arthur Winograd, violist Raphael Hillyer, violinist Robert Mann and violinist Robert Koff. Its lineup has changed with time and today it is home to violinist Ronald Copes, violinist Joseph Lin, cellist Joel Krosnick and violist Samuel Rhodes. Its members have gone on to head institutions such as the Cleveland Institute of Music where former violinist Joel Smimoff is the president. Since its founding, the group has been the Juilliard School's quartet in residence and has been seen live by many through Julliard String Quartet tickets.
The Julliard String Quartet has received many awards including Grammy Awards and is a member of the Hall of Fame of the National Academy Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame, the body behind the Grammy Awards. It is also the recipient of the same academy's Lifetime Achievement Award, known also as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, for outstanding contributions to the genre of classical music.
The Julliard String Quartet performs live a variety of classical music pieces by famous composers such as Beethoven, Bartók, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Shostakovich as well as contemporary composers such as Milton Babbitt and Ralph Shapey. It has also performed live with musicians such as Maurizio Pollini, Aaron Copland and Yo-Yo Ma. It also participates in recording movie soundtracks, for movies such as the popular Immortal Beloved.
The Julliard String Quartet has also recorded music for many a record label, beginning back in 1949 when it recorded for Sony Classical, then known as CBS Masterworks and Columbia Records. Its discography is home to over one hundred pieces of music, a diverse repertoire that is home to many different compositions. In 1950 alone, the group had three appearances in Boston's Peabody Mason Concerts. Recordings by the group, particularly their Bartok string quartet recordings for Columbia Records and RCA Living Stereo records are particularly famous.
The Julliard String Quartet is an award winning act that has been home to many famous classical musicians over the course of over sixty years. Since its founding in 1949, it has been the Julliard School's resident quartet, no easy feat. It is the recipient of many awards.
