It is not for nothing that Jose Jose has been called The Prince of Song. This Mexican singer has all the qualities that are required to become the phenomenon that he is today.
His is the winners-story that starts with struggle and hardships but ends on a good note. However, considering the long booming career of this fantastic singer, we can safely say that his story still continues and more is still to come from the powerhouse of talent we know as Jose Jose.
Born on February 17, 1948 as Jose Romulo Sosa Ortiz, music was in the blood of Jose Jose. Being the child of operatic tenor father and classical pianist mother, Jose learned advanced singing techniques and started playing guitar, bass and keyboards at the very early age.
Although his parents guided him about the difficulties one has to encounter in achieving success in show business, his passion for music and singing only grew deeper and stronger with the passage of time.
Jose Jose first official stint with music was during his teens. He started his career with serenades and then joined a bossa nova jazz band called Los Peg. Besides singing, he used to play bass and double bass with this band.
After playing with the band in night clubs and local jazz festivals, Jose Jose gained some attention from local music lovers. While a small contract and two unsuccessful singles kept him busy for some time, Jose returned to serenades and his band till he got the right chance.
It was in the mid-1960s when Jose took the artistic name Jose Jose and recorded his first album with the support of his mother. His father was no more till then. Although welcomed by critics in a big way, he did not manage to hit big with his debut act. However, lady luck started smiling on him till the late 1960s and he gained big exposure with his song La Nave del Olvido followed by a successful second album.
When Jose Jose represented Mexico in 1970 international song festival II Festival de la Canci?n Latina, and got the third place; everyone admired his romantic ballad style and his unique voice. He became the star of stars in Mexico and international audience also responded to his great talent.
Over the years, Jose Jose made churned out many blockbuster albums and hit singles. Songs like Hasta Que Vuelvas, Del Altar A La Tumba, Buscando Una Sonrisa, De Pueblo En Pueblo, Cuando Tu Me Quieras, Vive, Dejame Conocerte and Divina Ilusi? earned him star status in Mexico and Latin America.
While Jose Joses El Pr?ncipe song that gave him the nickname of El Pr?ncipe De La Canci?n or The Prince Of The Song, his musical gems like El Amar y El Querer and Gavil?n o Paloma became the classics of Mexican music. Jose Jose also launched a successful acting career with the '80s Ortiz, however music remained his top-most priority and he continuously produced one hit after the other.
Besides remaining a top selling music artist, Jose Jose has also proved himself as a sell-out touring artist. He has rocked his fans all over the world be it the Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall or The Dunes. From the Las Vegas Hilton and the Tropicana Casino to Atlantic City, from Israel to Japan, and from television to autobiographical movies; you can find Jose Jose everywhere.
Besides gaining acceptance as Mexico's Top Singer, Jose Jose has won awards and honors for his impeccable services to the world of music.
A special concession by the Mexican government, Prize to Excellence, Billboard Magazines Best Latin Artist and declared as the Person of the Year by Latin Grammy Award Recording Association; honors fall like stars in Jose Joses kitty. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and several Grammy nominations are another prove of this mans excellence in music.
