Jean-Philippe Smet is popularly known by his stage name Johnny Hallyday. The French singer and actor is widely regarded as an icon in the French speaking world. When he made his beginnings, he was considered as a French Elvis Presley by a few. Over the years, he has presented his fans with eighteen platinum albums and numerous tours. He has sold more than one hundred million records worldwide.. However, due to language barriers, Hallyday is not known particularly well in non French countries. Fans in English-speaking countries call him "the biggest rock star you've never heard of". Nevertheless, Johnny has still been able to mark his presence internationally by being the one of the most famous non-Anglophone Rock 'n Roll artists. In 1997, Johnny was made Chevalier (Knight) of the 'Légion d'honneur'.
Johnny was greatly influenced by the renowned Elvis Presley and the music of the fifties rock revolution. He stepped into the limelight in the sixties and became famous for singing French rock and roll songs. In 1960, Johnny released his debut single Laisse les filles through the Vogue label which was followed by his debut album "Hello Johnny". The following year in 1961, he released the cover of the song Let's Twist Again which won a gold disc and sold more than one million copies. The first time he performed with Bruno was back in 1966 when the Anglo-American rock band, 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience' opened the concert for Johnny. The repertoire of their contributions includes film soundtracks such as Reclamation (News Report), Regarde Pour Moi (What You Will) and Amen (Bang Bang). These sessions also spawned an EP track Que Je T'aime. By 1969, Johnny had sold over twelve million records worldwide.
In 2000, Johnny entertained an audience of over five hundred thousand people along with nine and a half million television viewers at the concert titled 100% Johnny: Live à La Tour Eiffel. In 2005, Mon Plus Beau Noël gave him his third number one song in France after Tous ensemble and Marie. In 2007, he released "Le Cour d'un homme" which was a blues-flavored album. The album was a number one hit in France as well as Belgium. In 2008, he released his next album titled "Ça ne finira jamais", which topped the French albums chart as well. The lead single from the album titled, Ça n'finira jamais also reached number one. The same year Johnny also had the opportunity to work with French musician Drexl Jonez. Together they released a series of acoustic songs.
