Joan Baez is a talented American folk musician, singer and activist. During her live performances, she uses her vibrato vocal style to add a distinct feel in her songs. She is currently aged 72 and is all set to perform live again. Purchase Joan Baez tickets to see her perform her greatest hits live.
Baez began her career by performing in coffee houses in Cambridge and Boston. She gained fame though her performance at the Newport Folk Festival and began recording in 1960. She released her first three albums titled 'Joan Baez in Concert', 'Joan Baez, Vol. 2' and 'Joan Baez'. Gold status was achieved by all the three albums and they ranked high on the hit album music charts for two years.
Her hit songs are covered by many different artists. The song 'Diamonds & Rust' was very popular at the time of its release. She covered songs by Phil Ocha and The Band. Some well known tracks of Joan Baez include 'Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word', 'Farewell Angelina', 'Sweet Sir Galahad', 'Joe Hill' and 'We Shall Overcome'. She performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 which helped Bob Dylan in gaining recognition during the time. She has also worked for human rights, the environment and nonviolence.
Baez has been performing publicly since over 55 years. She has released 30 studio albums during her entire career. She has recorded songs in different languages besides English and is fluent in Spanish. Although she is a folk singer, the artist has sung pop and folk rock songs during the 1960s. Baez took interest in gospel music during the same time. She writes original lyrics but her songwriting is influenced by artists such as Jackson Brownie, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.
She sung at different music clubs before her magnificent performance at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. She released the album titled 'Joan Baez' in 1960 under Vangaurd. The album included famous child ballads including the famous 'Mary Hamilton'. Her second album titled 'Joan Baez, Vol. 2' was released a year later and it went gold.
She released the Joan Baez in Concert albums in two parts. The first part was released in 1962 and the second was released a year later. Her single 'Phil Ochs' was a mid level US chart hit in 1965 with 'There but for Fortune'. She included new instruments in the recordings of 'Farewell Angelina' which included some completely rearranged Dylan songs. Baez hired Peter Schickele to compose classic music for her next albums as she wanted to prove her versatility. She released her first classic album titled 'Noel' in 1966 which was dedicated to Christmas.
She is still recording albums from time to time. In 2001, Vanguard re-released her first 13 studio albums which were produced during the 1960-1971 era. She released her 2003 album titled 'Dark Chords on a Big Guitar' to begin her modern music era. Her performance at Bowery Ballroom was recorded and released as 'Bowery Songs' in 2005. Proper Records decided to release her 1995 'Ring Them Bells' live album in 2007.
With the release of these albums, Baez earned a place with the modern artists. She continued her successful run of modern music with the release of the 2008 album 'Day After Tomorrow'. She performed at the 50th Newport Folk Festival in 2009 performing all her greatest hits as this was the festival where her career actually began and she always remembered this.
Baez was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 which summarizes all her work and also describes just how good an artist she is. Most artists struggle to perform live but Baez has not let her age affect her music. Her vocals are still as powerful as they were back in the day, and she still carries her vibrato vocals in most of her songs.
If you love folk music, you will enjoy all the songs in her current set list. Purchase Joan Baez tickets to watch her perform live.
