But what audiences might not know however, is that it wasnt the voice of this famous French songbird that was heard in the movie. Jil Airgot gave her voice over for Cotillard.

Raised in Cannes, France, Jil Aigrot began studying music at her early age. After specializing in French song, she headed towards theaters and performed there for several years. Jil came to be particularly interested in Light Opera.

With appearances on the popular French television shows like Qui Est Qui and Cest Lete, her reputation grew. These shows helped her to build her image as a singer in Remington Steele with Pierce Brosnan.

Her additional acting and singing roles included the famed DellArte Cie in Nice, stage performances of La Rue, Brel Est Vivant, Il Habite aux Marquieses at the Avignon Festival, Les Enchantees, Sur La Butte and a special tribute to Jacques Brel.

In 2006, writer/director Olivier Dahan helmed La Vie en Rose. It was a screen biopic of tragic French songstress Edith Piaf. The once superstar, Piaf was raised as a young girl by her grandmother in a Normandy bordello. She then discovered on a French street corner by cabaret proprietor Louis Leplee (Gerard Depardieu).

This key character of the film was played by Marion Cotillard. La Vie En Rose segued breezily between various episodes from Piafs life including her abandonment as a young girl by her contortionist father lover; her period in Hollywood during the 50s; her brushes with the law as an adult; and her 1951 car accident and others.

Cotillards ability to funnel personal tragedy and emotional struggles into her vocalizations dazzled audiences watching the movie.

Jil Aigrot, as a touring Piaf performer herself, found herself on familiar terrain when she took up her role in the movie La Vie En Rose. Previously an actress, Jil threw herself into the performance that brought her to the big screen. She came up with an album called Words of Love.

The album included Aigrots interpretations of nearly 20 of Piafs most noteworthy songs. Words of Love was a tribute to Piaf which was released on March 11, with a concert with Upright Cabaret at the Viceroy Hotel in Palm Springs.
