The once superstar, Piaf was raised as a young girl by her grandmother in a Normandy bordello. She then discovered on a French street corner by cabaret proprietor Louis Leplee (Gerard Depardieu).
This key character of the film was played by Marion Cotillard. La Vie En Rose segued breezily between various episodes from Piafs life including her abandonment as a young girl by her contortionist father lover; her period in Hollywood during the 50s; her brushes with the law as an adult; and her 1951 car accident and others.
Cotillards ability to funnel personal tragedy and emotional struggles into her vocalizations dazzled audiences watching the movie.
Jil Aigrot, as a touring Piaf performer herself, found herself on familiar terrain when she took up her role in the movie La Vie En Rose. Previously an actress, Jil threw herself into the performance that brought her to the big screen. She came up with an album called Words of Love.
