The Jessye Norman Master Class is a special event being held at the Carnegie Hall and taglined as The Song Continues. The Jessye Norman Master Class features one of the most celebrated classical vocalists, a singer who has become synonymous with roles such as Leonore, Sieglinde, Alceste and Ariadne in classical music masterpieces. Jessye Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia to an insurance salesman and a school teacher. Both her mother and her grandmother were amateur pianists whereas her father sang in a local choir. At a young age, encouraged by her mother, she learned how to play the piano. From the age of four, she began singing, such as at the Mount Cavalry Baptist Church. While nine years old, she heard opera on the radio and instantly grew fond of it.
Soon after that, the star of the Jessye Norman Master Class began listen to music by Leontyne Price and Marian Anderson. She competed in the Marian Anderson Vocal Competition in Philadelphia at the age of sixteen and was immediately offered a scholarship at the Howard University, located in Washington DC and one of the finest universities in the US and the world. She joined the university as well as its chorus. While still studying, she was a professional soloist working at the Lincoln Temple United Church of Christ.
While still studying, Jessye Norman Master Class's star began attracting nationwide attention, particularly after winning a singing contest held by the National Society of Arts and Letters. A year after, Jessye Norman graduated and continued studies at the Peabody Conservatory and then the University of Michigan from where she graduated with a masters degree in 1968. Soon after, she began performing in Europe where she won many competitions such as ARD International Music Competition.
