Jeff Mangum is an American rock artist from Ruston, Louisiana who has been active since 1987. He is also a musician, best known for his mastery of the guitar, who also plays the drums, organ, bass, vocals and floor tom. He has released music through labels such as Orange Twin Records and Merge Records. He is best known as the vocalist, guitarist and lyricist of Neutral Milk Hotel and has played with many other bands such as Circulatory System, Synthetic Flying Machine, The Olivia Tremor Control, Cranberry Lifecycle, Major Organ and the Adding Machine, The Apples in Stereo and Elf Power. Best known as the Neutral Milk Hotel's frontman, Jeff Mangum is also famous in the music industry as one of the founders of The Elephant 6 Recording Company. He grew up in Ruston, Louisiana and went on to study at the Ruston High School during the eighties with other founders of The Elephant 6 Recording Company, with whom he shared a love for Donovan and The Zombies, two famous sixties groups.
Jeff Mangum's first band was Synthetic Flying Machine, as a drummer, together with guitarist Will Cullen Hart and bassist Bill Doss. He then left the band and started writing his own songs. He then went on to record this songs at Pet Sounds Recording Studio with Robert Schneider, resulting in an album labeled On Avery Island and released in 1996. A second album, with a larger lineup, was released in 1998 and titled In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
Jeff Mangum's albums as a member of Neutral Milk Hotel propelled him to fame with the album's songs topping charts and selling many copies. In 2001, together with many musicians from bands such as Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power and of Montreal, he recorded an album labeled Major Organ and the Adding Machine. He also released a compilation album of Bulgarian folk music and a live album.
In 2002, Jeff Mangum went on to host a number of radio shows and in 2006, he contributed to The Apples in Stereo's new studio album. In 2009, he contributed to Circulatory System's album. A year earlier, he had returned to performing live, playing for the first time since 2001 songs from Neutral Milk Hotel's discography. In 2010, he played at Bushwick, Brooklyn performing ten songs including six from two Neutral Milk Hotel albums.
In 2011, he performed two more shows in Toronto, Ontario, playing music from Neutral Milk Hotel's albums and also performed at the All Tomorrow's Parties organized in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He also played at the Zuccotti Park and at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, a charity show for the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. In 2012, he played live at the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as well as at the All Tomorrow's Parties organized in Minehead, UK.
