The original members of Jars of Clay joined hands in the early 1990s, when they met at Greenville College and started writing songs together. Dan Haseltine and Charlie Lowell met at music and recording classes that they had been taking for a while. They began to write songs together, meanwhile Matt Odmark joined a while later. The group started off playing at coffeehouses through which they became somewhat famous for some of their songs. In 1994, Jars of Clay decided to take part in a talent contest which was run by the Gospel Music Association. After sending their demo, they were notified that they were among the finalists in the competition. The band traveled to Nashville to perform, after which they won the competition. Since then there has been no looking back for them.

Jars of Clay titled the demo tape 'Frail' which also included a song of the same name. It attracted a lot of attention from various labels and the offers started to pour in. The band then moved to Nashville in order to make it big in the music world. Jars of Clay covers a variety of styles, from Christian rock to pop rock, even acoustic rock and alternative. The band has also succeeded in winning five awards from Broadcast Music Incorporated, sixteen nominations and five wins from the GMA Dove Awards, and three nominations from the American Music Awards.

Their first self-titled album, 'Jars of Clay', was certified two times Platinum in the US and Gold in Canada. The album topped both theBillboard Heatseekers and Billboard Top Contemporary Christian charts in 1995. Their next album which was released in 1997, titled 'Much Afraid' was certified Platinum in the US and topped at number eight on the Billboard 200. Two other albums which were released in 1999 and 2003, respectively, were certified Gold in the US.
