Born in New York City and raised in Marin County, Lewis is the lead singer as well as the harmonica player of Huey Lewis and the News. Before starting out, he hitchhiked across the country, playing harmonica at bus stops and airports. In Europe, he did concerts to earn enough to make it back to the US.  Upon returning, he got admitted to Cornell University and joined Slippery Elm before moving back to San Francisco where he continued playing music along with doing other odd jobs including carpentry, natural foods, vent planning.

Lewis started his music career in 1971 and joined Clover, the Bay Area band that stayed active until 1978. He was featured in Baby Drives Me Crazy from "Live and Dangerous," a classic LP by Thin Lizzy. A year later, he formed his own band which consisted of members with whom he had previously played at various gigs. The band was named Huey Lewis and the American Express which was later changed to Huey Lewis and the News. The band released its first self-titled album in 1980.

A year later, the band released its second album "Picture This", which became  certified gold. It produced the hit single Do You Believe in Love, which peaked at number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100. Owing to the success of this song, the album entered the Billboard 200 at number thirteen and remained there for 35 weeks.

Huey Lewis and the News  next album "Sports" came out in 1983. In the support of the album, the band went on "Workin' for a Living' tour". Initially, the album charted at number six but by the end of 1984, it was a number one hit and a year later, it was multi-platinum certified. To date, more than ten million copies of "Sports" have been sold. Among the hit numbers from the album that entered the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 are If This Is It, I Want a New Drug and Heart and Soul.

In 1985, Huey Lewis and the News recorded two songs for Back to the Future; Back in Time and The Power of Love. The Power of Love was a huge success, charting at number one on the US billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for an Academy Award. Following this mainstream success, the band released "Fore!", which hit number one on the Billboard 200 and spawned three number one singles including Hip to Be Square. The album was multiple-platinum certified.

The band's next platinum-certified album was "Small World", which was followed by extensive touring. Huey Lewis and the News resumed recording in 1991 after which a total of four albums came out. The band is currently working on its upcoming album and will be heading out for its fall 2014 tour.
