Hillsong United remain a problematic band for conventional critics to describe. Hillsong United's music and religious roots emerge from Hillsong church, a Pentecostal mega-church based in Australia. The band was originally formed by youth members of the Church, called the "Powerhouse Youth". They used to compose music for the Church's weekly meetings. These consisted of original material and reworked radio hits. Slowly, the musical movement began to grab versatility, with the interdenominational ministry Youth Alive's leading artists getting involved. These included guitarist and pianist Marty Sampson, Darlene Zschech and keyboardist and music director Peter King. The music was given a rock tinge and the artists managed to make it more appealing to global audiences.

By the 80s, Powerhouse was split into the seniors' group of 18-25 years olds (Powerhouse), and a group of 12-17 years olds (Wildlife). The influential Reuben Morgan, Marcus Beaumont and Peter King were major figures Powerhouse, while Able band members Joel Houston, Marty Sampson, Luke Munns, and Michael Guy Chislett were trained by Pastor Russell Fragar in Wildlife. 1997 was a pivotal year, as the summer camp saw Wildlife and its music inspire the entire gathering. The different youth ministries kept convening regularly, and after youth music was given a chance many nights in a row, Morgan embraced it wholeheartedly, writing for them. Zschech pitched the idea of an album, and the EP One was recorded and released with the Church's annual album release. It received massive acclaim in Australia, and a live album release has accompanied Hillsong every year since. 2002 saw Morgan finally retire and his place was taken by the talented Joel Houston, senior pastor Brian's son. Munns left Hillsong to front his indie band, but Hillsong received a boost in 2006 with Brook Ligertwood's recruitment. She was a popular New Zealand artist and made a successful transition after joining the church. Sampson got married and retired in 2006.

Hillsong usually recorded their CD/DVDs on the ministry's youth conference Encounterfest, yet they changed that with their first studio-recorded album All of the Above in 2007. With tours leading international worship, Aftermath was released in 2011. Current band leaders are Joel Houston, Jonathan "J.D" Douglas, and Jadwin "Jad" Gillies.

"My Redeemer Lives", penned by Morgan, was a hit that got the EP One rolling as a result of the 1997 music revival. Hillsong have released nine live albums, with 2008's 30-song The I Heart Revolution: with Hearts as One being released as CD, DVD, USB flash drive, and later made into a film as well. 2009's Across the Earth: Tear down the Walls topped the US Christian albums chart, and significantly hit #21 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 200. With regards to Hillsong's two studio albums, 2007's All of the Above topped the US Christian and Nielsen Christian charts, getting a Dove Award nomination. 2011's Aftermath has so far topped the Christian charts and also climbed to #17 on the Hot 200.
