The Southern purveyor of gospel music, Bill Gaither, began his music career in the fifties. He formed his first group while he was a college student along with his brother, Danny Gaither and sister, Mary Ann. Gaither landed a teaching job and continued his music career along with the fulltime job for many years.
In the sixties, he decided to quit his teaching job and joined the Christian music industry as his career choice. He recorded the single, He Touched Me, in 1964 which became his breakthrough song. His music showed influences of southern gospel artists like Hovie Lister, Jake Hess, the Statesmen Band, Happy Goodmans band and the Speers.
As a songwriter, Bill Gaither, has not only written songs for himself, but also for many other artists. Bill, along with his wife Gloria Gaither, has written hits like The Longer I Serve Him, Because He Lives, There's Something About That Name and Let's Just Praise The Lord. Several notable musicians have sung his songs, including Christian Artists like Carman, David Crowder Band, The Cathedral Quartet, Heritage Singers and The Speers.
Gaither has also written for many country singers, like The Statler Brothers and pop artists like Elvis Presley. Gloria often writes the lyrics to which Bill adds the music. As of 2012, the duo had composed more than seven hundred songs. Mary Ann eventually replaced in the Gaither Trio by Gloria Gaither and the trio was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1999.
The Gaither Vocal Band was formed in the eighties and has undergone several lineup changes. In 1991, the members included several great voices in the southern gospel music scene, like The Cathedrals, the Gatlins, Jake Hess and J. D. Sumner. After the recording session of the band's album, "Homecoming", the members stayed in the studio and swapped stories while casually chatting, singing old standards around the piano. All this was recorded and later released as videos. It was so well received that Bill Gaither began to professionally produce videos with even larger gatherings of gospel artists. These became the Homecoming Recordings.
These recordings lead to a concert tour. In 1996, songs from the videos was performed live for the first time in front of live audiences. These concerts also received an explosive reaction from the public and by 2004 the Gaither Homecoming Tour reached sixteenth in the Pollstar ranking of tours. These concerts have also branched out into twice-yearly cruises. In 2009, a Homecoming cruise was also recorded and released two years later in January 2011.
All in all, Bill Gaither has released more than forty albums and has earned five Grammy Awards. He has been the Gospel Music Association's Songwriter of the Year eight times. Now you can watch this incredible performer live on stage along with many other southern gospel and Christian musicians.
