Sir Elton John was a prodigy who started playing piano at the age of three. By the time he turned seven, he started his formal piano lessons. His father who was a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force tried to discourage him but John's musical talent was too unique to be buried beneath another profession. His mother and maternal grandparents supported him and encouraged him to pursue the field. When he was eleven years old, he received a junior scholarship to study in the Royal Academy of Music. In the next four years, his music prowess deepened. He started writing music. In 1964, he formed a band with his friends and named it 'Bluesology'. The band used to provide backup for American touring bands like Major Lance, The Isley Brothers, Doris Troy and Patti LaBelle, The Bluebelles and Billy Stewart. In 1966 the band formed a more permanent position as supporting band of Long John Baldry. A year later he formed a partnership with Bernie Taupin which continues even today and recorded their first song called "Scarecrow". That same year he changed his name from Reginald Kenneth Dwight to Elton John as a tribute to Long John Baldry and his band's saxophonist Elton Dean. You will get to listen to some of his earliest songs from this time period at the Elton John the Million Dollar Piano concert.
He released his first album in 1969. It was titled Empty Sky. However, he came into public eye with his second album which was self-titled. Its second single "Your Song" was featured in the US Top Ten. Since then, there has been one success after another. In more than forty years of his career, he has recorded more than thirty albums and sold over 250 million copies of records. His song "Candle in the Wind 1997" which he wrote for the late Lady Diana, alone has sold more than 33 million copies becoming the best selling song in the history of Billboard.
