Elliot Minor
Created by Alex Davies, Elliot Minor (formerly The Academy) is a band from York, United Kingdom. With a history of classical training, their music is a fusion of classical and rock.
The band consists of members Alex Davies (Guitar and Vocals), Ed Minton (Guitar and Vocals), Dan Hetherton (Drums and Backing Vocals), Ali Paul (Piano and Keyboard) and Teddy Hetherton (Bass).
A few years back, Elliot Minor started off as an acoustic pair (Alex Davies and Ed Minton) in 2004/2005. In their last year at school, Alex and Ed got serious about the band and so got together a simple recording studio in their attic flat, where they spent every spare minute writing songs, recording demos and performing after a year they built a more sophisticated home studio in garage.
They made great progress. The only thing lacking was a drummer! Dan Hetherton attended Pocklington School where music was his main focus along with drama. In October 2005, having left school, Alex and Dan had a chance meeting at the Minster while picking up younger brothers.
That led to the formation of Elliot Minor and the trio began recording new songs, improving old songs and sending out demos. Soon they grew a following and started to do more and more gigs. As gigs became more frequent, they decided to include Ali Paul and Ed Hetherton (Dans brother) in the band to fill in the positions of keyboard and bass respectively.
Elliot Minor, when they were still known as The Academy, supported McFly in Newcastle in 2006 to an audience of over 13,000 people and was spotted by a representative of Repossession Records to whom they later signed a record deal leading to their first single, Parallel Worlds, in Los Angeles.
It was a minor hit, entering the charts at number 31. Repossession Records was a new label founded by former MCA Vice President and Head of A&R Gary Ashley, who is credited with signing and developing legendary acts including Kylie Minogue, Blink-182, Shaggy, New Found Glory, Something Corporate, Aqua and Sublime among others.
The first release was followed by four more single releases -- Jessica, The White One Is Evil, Still Figuring Out, and a re-release of Parallel Worlds -- as well as a national tour. In 2008 Elliot Minor's first album, simply titled Elliot Minor was released. With every track the band has something different to offer on this debut album.
Produced by Jim Wirt (Hoobastank, Something Corporate), and mixed by Neal Avron (Yellowcard, New Found Glory, Fall Out Boy) it was an exquisitely fine display of music from the York based quintet. The album contains all four of their top 40 singles Jessica ,The White One Is Evil, Still Figuring Out and Parallel Worlds.
There are some good upbeat tracks and some slower, deeper tracks. With tracks such as 'Liar Is You', 'The Broken Minor', and closing track 'Last Call to New York City' the music is awash with beautiful orchestral elements and the vocals are laced stunningly atop of the music. It's a far cry from the bouncy pop of the bands singles.
The album reached #6 in the UK Charts within the 1st week of its release, and #30 in the Irish Charts. 'Elliot Minor' is a fine album; a meticulously blended genres of pop punk, rock, and classical. Their music is influenced by Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin, MC Hammer, The Nolan Sisters, Queen, The Beach Boys, The All-American Rejects, John Williams and James Horner.
Since their inevitable rise to pop stardom began last year, they have been touring around the country including Scotland. Locations include Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, London, Glasgow and Birmingham.
They have the honour of being the second band to play on the Dimebag Darrell Stage on Saturday 9th June at the Download Festival 2007. On another tour the band played abroad in Ireland with gigs in Dublin and Belfast. On September 15th 2007, they were the headlining act at ButserFest, Queen Elizabeth Country Park.
Recently they have been on the UK tour that started in January and ended in April of 2008. Elliot Minor currently has around 30 songs recorded and is still writing and recording. All material consists of original songs written and recorded by Elliot Minor or Alex Davies, the frontman.
