The original idea of the Electric Daisy Carnival, and indeed the name itself, came from DJ Steve Kool-Aid. He was an electronic music producer and artist hailing from Portland, Oregon, who grew in the game mainly due to the fame enjoyed by his rave parties in the 80s and 90s. Mostly underground in nature, his rave promotion company named one of these the Electric Daisy Carnival. His partner Gary finally handed over rights to the name to Insomniac Event’s partner Philip Blaine, who had been his acquaintance since their days together at 1500 Records. At the time, Insomniac Events had recently started to make its mark on the festival scene, having commenced operations under founder Pasquale Rotella in 1993. Later on, they went on to develop a smoothly functioning organizing and promotions company that now is behind many top-selling shows and festivals like Nocturnal Wonderland, Escape from Wonderland, Audiotistic, Beyond Wonderland, Electric Forest, and White Wonderland. The first Electric Daisy Carnival was held in 1997 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, with a lineup of Curious, Ani of Dee Lite, Fester and Oscure, Fusion, John Kelly, Jun, Raymond Roker, Rabbit in the Moon, Thomas Michael, Taylor, and Dieselboy. The genres were mainly trance, dance, electronic and house music, with some hip hop and dub-step artists thrown in.
 
Organizers have traditionally picked a stellar cast of musicians for the festival. This year’s Electric Daisy Carnival hits New York’s colossal MetLife Stadium on May 19^th and 20^th after collaboration between Insomniac and Pacha, and the catalogue of hits notched up by the featured artists is simply phenomenal. Dutch DJ Afrojack heads the list; running off a string of successful remixes of Snoop Dogg’s “Last Night” and Pitbull ’s “Give Me Everything”. Swedish progressive house DJ Alesso features after the hit “Pressure” stormed the market, while local hero Bassnectar also finds a place. Big beat pioneer Fatboy Slim will share the stage with Dutch dub-step expert R3hab. Other artists include Avicii, Chuckie, Thomas Gold, An21 and Max Vangeli, and many others. This power-packed roster will only be bettered by the one for the Las Vegas dates (June 8^th-10^th), which isn’t completely finalized as yet. Six stages are set up, including Kinetic Field, Cosmic Meadow, Circuit Grounds, Neon Garden, Bass Pod, and Heineken Domes. According to early indications, featured artists will include the likes of Eric Prydz, Calvin Harris, deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner, Dada Life, Rusko, Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack, Skrillex, Alesso, Martin Solveig, Chemical Brothers, Skream, Nero, Avicii, Terravita, and 40 others.
 
The Electric Daisy Carnival was initially a one-day festivity that only expanded to two days in 2009, and three in 2011. The traditional home had been Southern California, but that has changed now. After 1997’s Los Angeles show, it was held in Tulare, Hansen Dam, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Expo Park till 2007. In this time, the only non-California venue was Austin, Texas in 2001 and 2002. However, satellite events started soon afterwards. 2008 had Los Angeles and Colorado on the list, 2009 rocked the aforementioned duo along with Puerto Rico, while 2010 even increased that to include Dallas. 2011 saw Las Vegas finally get a nod (roping in over 220,000 attendees over 3 days), along with Orlando, Dallas, Puerto Rico, and Colorado.
