Doo Wop music is based on vocals being the primary focus of every song. It is a form of rhythm and blues music that puts major emphasis on the voice accompanied by very simple music, lyrics and is done mostly by vocal harmony. The Doo Wop was introduced to the masses by African-American groups. The genre originated from cities like Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
The very first origins of the Doo Wop can be traced back to as early as the late 1930's. The songs were done with very little and simple music in mostly
a four-part harmony. Groups like the Mills Brothers and The Ink Spots laid the foundations for the genre to become famous. Both these bands were from Cincinnati and created hits like My Prayer, Whispering Grass, Bless You, Till Then and Paper Doll. These songs were all created between the late 1930's and the early 1940's to huge successes. Yes, these songs weren't completely Doo Wop as it later became known but they provided the basis on which Doo Wop later went on to be based with brilliant vocals and simple music being the hallmarks of these songs as well.
During the early years it was mostly sung on various street corners and subways. That could be done quite easily as compared to other music forms because it didn't require a lot of instruments to be played. A group of three to four people would come together and start singing which sometimes included simple music and also mimicking the sounds of various instruments to create a very unique form of music.
The Doo Wop craze really kicked on in the 1950's and the 1960's with groups like The Clovers, The Rainbows, The Five Satins etc with their blend of amazing vocals and sounds being generated by themselves. In some songs instruments were also used but they remained well and truly in the background so that the groups and the songs could take center stage. The Turbans track When You Dance is thought to be the first major hit of this genre. Released in 1955, the recording went on to become a huge hit and helped to start the phenomenal rise of the Doo Wop for the next decade or so.
The Doo Wop extravaganzas really started to get the attention it deserved when a lot of bands started to enter the frame and the genre started to evolve. Initially most songs were slow but over the period of time the genre also incorporated fast music and that helped to give it another dimension and take it one step further. The profile of the genre was further enhanced when Italian-Americans started to form their own Doo Wop bands which helped to take the genre to a whole new world.
