Donald Fagen is an American artist from Passaic, New Jersey who has been active in the world of rock music since 1971. He is a singer and a musician who plays piano, keyboard, organ, melodica and saxophone. He has released music as part of the famous band Steely Dan and in his solo career through record labels such as Reprise Records, ABC Records and MCA Records. He is best known as the lead vocalist, co-founder and the chief songwriter Steely Dan and has also been a part of the band, Jay & the Americans. He is famous for his unique style of music that made use of jazz harmonies and feature an elaborate attention to detail. After the breakup of Steely Dan, he launched a successful solo career with many watching him live with Donald Fagen tickets. He returned to the band after its reunion to continue touring with it at many venues in the US and all over the world.
Donald Fagen was born to an accountant father and a singer mother who instilled a passion for music in him. His mother sang for a hotel band at a young age and was always singing at home or playing music, putting more passion for music in a young Donald Fagen. During the fifties, he became interested in R&B and rock music through records such as Reelin' and Rockin' by Chuck Berry. At the age of eleven, he grew fond of jazz and went to see the Newport Jazz Festival, moving on to jazz from rock and roll. During the sixties, Donald Fagen formed and joined many bands as well as forming a partnership with Walter Becker whom he met at Bard College while studying English Literature. By the seventies, they were working as songwriters for ABC Dunhill Records and performing as Jay and the Americans. In 1970, Steely Dan was formed after the two met up with Denny Dias. Although Steely Dan started out as a band, it gradually turned into a studio project made up of him and Walter Becker. In 1974, they released their third LP and in 1977, the album Aja was released which was certified platinum by the RIAA. By this time, he was producing and recording albums with the best jazz and rock musicians.
During the eighties, Steely Dan was inactive for much of the time but returned in the nineties to released several more albums such as 2000's Two Against Nature and 2003's Everything Must Go that earned Donald Fagen many Grammy Awards. During the eighties, he also began his solo career by releasing the album The Nightfly in 1982 which went on to rank eleventh on the Billboard albums chart and was certified platinum in the US after selling over a million albums in the US only. Its songs ranked high on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album itself received several Grammy Award nominations in categories such as the Album of the Year. In 1993, he released his second album titled as Kamakiriad which went to rank in the top ten of the Billboard charts and selling over nine hundred thousand copies in a short time. Like the first album, it also received a Grammy Award nomination in the Album of the Year category. His third album, Morph the Cat, took two years to create and was released in 2006. It was the subject of many rave reviews, was ranked as the Album of the Year and Producer of the Year Award by Mix magazine and won the Grammy Award for Best Sorround Sound Album.
