The Cowboy Fringants was formed in a hockey locker room in 1994, when singer, Karl Tremblay and guitarist, Jean Francois met each other for the first time. They both decided to jam, and soon a few more talented performers were asked to join the group. That was when the band went public. Currently, five musicians are a part of the Fringants' lineup, who all specialize in different areas in music. Marie plays the violin, accordion, piano, mandolin and banjo, whereas, Francois is on rhythm guitar; Nic plays the lead guitar, Karl Tremblay is on vocals and Jerome Dupras takes care of the bass department. They cite music composer, Pierre. F. Brault and singer, Renaud as one of their biggest influences. Together, these gifted musicians have proved their worth to the world by providing the music industry with a variety of hit songs like, "The Clock," "Straight Ahead," "Tele" and "The Ballad" by Jipi Labrosse.
Les Cowboys Fringants create modernized Quebec folk music with a rock flavor which is undoubtedly their unique selling point. In the past years, they have gained an international following, including in France, England, Quebec, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada and the US. Besides amazing song compositions, each band member also contributes to the lyrics in order to make the songs unique. The subject matter in most of their songs revolves around topics like family troubles, environmentalism, anguish, poverty, state-controlled gambling and political apathy. These subjects may sound serious, but in the band's music, they are often treated in a light manner, sometimes even in a fun, amusing and ironic way. Les Cowboys Fringants' songwriting is also popular for having fictional characters with interpersonal relationships that are often mentioned in more than one song.
