Christopher John Boyle a.k.a Chris Cornell was born in Seattle, Washington on July 20, 1964 is an American guitarist/singer-songwriter is known for his vocals, guitaring, and songwriting for the rock bands like Soundgarden (1984-1997) and Audioslave (2001-2007). He was also the leadingman for Temple of the Dog (1990-1992). He started off as a drummer, and then proceeded to singing and guitaring. He also enjoyed acclaim as a solo performer with his first solo album Euphoria Morning (September 1999). Its follow-up Carry On was released in June 2007.

Cornell spent his childhood in Seattle. Cornell's last name used to be Boyle, but after his parents, Ed Boyle and Karen Cornell got divorced, he and his siblings took his mother's maiden name. Cornell mentions on the Audioslave - Live in Cuba DVD Documentary that he spent 2 years between the ages of 9 and 11 solidly listening to The Beatles after finding a large collection of Beatles records in the basement of a house. He then suffered from a severe case of depression during his teenage years, rarely leaving the house. At one time, he spent a whole year without leaving his house, during which time he would play drums and guitar.Before pursuing with his music career, Chris worked at a seafood wholesaler and was a sous-chef at a restaurant.

He is currently married to Vicky Karayiannis (a Paris-based publicist), and was previously married to Susan Silver, the manager of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. He has a daughter from Susan, Lillian Jean in June 2000, before divorcing her in 2001 and remarried to Vicky in 2003. She gave birth to his second daughter named Toni in September 2004. In December 2005 wife Vicky gave birth to their second and his third child, Christopher Nicholas.

Chris has an older brother, Peter and two younger sisters, Katy and Suzy. They formed the band, Inflatable Soule, a moderately popular band during the ?90?s in Seattle. Peter has a new band Black Market Radio, which released their debut album entitled Suicide Parlour in 2006. The similarity in their voices is mysterious and Peter Cornell's band and sound is described as similar to Soundgarden.

Along with Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam, Soundgarden became one of the biggest and most successful bands in the early 90s. Originally formed in 1984 by Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, and Hiro Yamamoto with Cornell originally on drums and vocals, they recruited drummer Scott Sundquist, so that Chris would switch to singing. Later, Scott was swapped by Matt Cameron, former drummer of Skin Yard.

The band signed to Sub Pop, releasing the Screaming Life EP in 1987, and the Fopp EP in 1988. A combination of the two was issued as Screaming Life/Fopp in 1990. In 1988 they signed to SST Records and releases their debut album, Ultramega OK (1988), and attainted a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 1990.

Cornell became known for the implausible power and range of his voice and for his dark meaningful lyrics often discussing death and existentialism. In 1989, the band released their second effort and also their first album for a major label, Louder Than Love, through A&M Records. It was also the last Soundgarden album to feature the band's original bassist Hiro Yamamoto who was swapped by Ben Shepherd. Soundgarden in 1991 earned double-platinum with the album Badmotorfinger. They used this achievement as a springboard, following up with 1994's Superunknown, the band's best critically and commercially acclaimed album, which sold 7 million copies globally and won them a pair of Grammys.

In late 1994, after touring in support of the album Superunknown, doctors discovered that Cornell had severely strained his vocal cords. Soundgarden cancelled several shows to avoid causing any permanent damage. During this time he collaborated with shock rocker Alice Cooper on Cooper's album The Last Temptation, and together with him wrote the song "Stolen Prayer".Their final album, the million-selling Down on the Upside followed in 1996, but served more to foreshadow the band's demise than to continue their successful climb. Due to tensions within the band, Soundgarden announced it was disbanding on April 9, 1997.
