A native of Williamsburg, Virginia, Canaan Smith finished Lafayette High School and moved to the Belmont University in Nashville to complete his graduation. The singer had grown up listening to country stalwarts like George Strait and Rage Against the Machine and was eager to develop a career of his own in the music epicenter of Nashville. Before long, the aspiring singer began playing at local gigs, striving to establish connections in the community.
The Amazing Race
The gifted youngster participated in the 15th season of a reality TV show titled "The Amazing Race". The show, aired on CBS in 2009, gave Smith the initial recognition amongst people. The competition featuring 12 teams each having two members, which were already related to each other, required the contestants to participate in a race around the world. In 2012, Smith was lucky to snag a publishing deal with Disney Records and co-wrote the smashing hit "Runaway" by the band Love and Theft. The singer eventually signed a recording deal with Mercury Records and released his first single "We Got Us" the same year. Although the song was co-written by numerous recognized artists like Stephen Barker Liles, and Tommy Lee James, the initial response from the release was middling. The single hit number 53 on the Country Music charts and a video was subsequently released, directed by Brian Lazarro. After the video was aired on GAC, the single generated quite a buzz hitting the GAC Top 20 Ballot. During the period, Smith consistently worked on a studio album of his own.

The blessed artist soon became a pop country icon after the Rolling Stone Country cited his name in the "10 New Artists You Need To Know: Fall 2014" list. Smith soon followed with an eponymous 5-track EP the next year, featuring famous country songs like "Two Lane Road" and "Love You Like That".
