The Bumbershoot started proceedings way back in the year 1971 in Seattle and it has been holding there ever since then. Initially, it used to be called "Festival '71" and was held over a course of two days. The festival was the manifestation of an idea of the Mayor of Seattle, "Wes Uhlman." The Bumbershoot was off to a flying start so the management had to make sure they raised the bar in terms of entertainment that the festival offered. The hard work paid off and next edition "Festival '72" saw one-hundred and seventy-five thousand people walk through the gates to attend the fest.

It was in 1973 that the name was changed to Bumbershoot and the duration of the festival was extended to five days. The attendance soared to two hundred thousand for the first time. The think tank then took a decision to extend the festival to ten days and that saw attendance figures make the jump to around three-hundred and twenty-five thousand.

In the late 1970's, funding from the government began to decline. The duration was cut and it began to focus primarily on putting local talent on stage. 1980 saw "One Reel," taking over and it has been looking after the festival ever since. The Bumbershoot is now held on the Labor Day weekend. With One Reel taking over the production duties the event managed to re-gain its former sheen.

One Reel began to re-package the entire event and it wasn't long before national and international artists were making their way to the Seattle Center to headline Bumbershoot. New attractions like laser shows, food vendors, walks, arts and crafts and body painting among many others were added that saw more and more people make their way to this fantastic event every year.
