This event has promoted itself as "The World's Largest Music Festival", a title that was certified by the Guinness World Records in 1999, the Big Gig is a music festival that takes place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States every year. This festival lasts for around eleven days, consisting of eleven stages with performances by more than seven hundred bands. The festival is popular in the United States for its musical talents from various genres. Known also as "Summerfest", Big Gig is held every year at the 75 acre park that is alongside the lakefront in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The park is called the Henry Maier Festival Park, which is named after the former mayor of Milwaukee who founded the Big Gig in 1960s. Henry W. Mair inspiration for the Summerfest came to him, when he visited the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. In 1970, the Summerfest introduced its famous red smiley face logo that has become synonymous with the event. The logo itself was designed by a local graphic artist, Noel Spangler. This yearly music festival usually takes place between late of June through early July, including the national 4th of July holiday.
The festival has been around since the mid 70s and each year has brought crowds between 800,000 and 1,000,000 people. The festival is run by a non-profit organization called the Milwaukee World Festival. The event features both local and national musical's talents as well as providing a large variety of food from many of Milwaukee restaurants. The Big Gig is most popular for the music it puts on display every year, ever since the first festival took place in 1968 there have been many famous musicians who have performed at Big Gig. Artist such as The New Colony Six, Ronnie Dove, Up With People, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, The Jonas Brothers, Fun, Maroon 5, Tina Turner, James Taylor, Chritina Aguilera, Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, Nine Inch Nails, Wiz Khalifa, The Gufs, Danny Gokey, BoDeans, Violent Femmes have graced the The Big Gig stages over the years.
Other attractions throughout the event include shopping vendors, comedy acts, and fireworks known as "The Big Bang" on the festival's opening night. Comedy has also been a very important part of the festival, especially the live comedy acts which are in Big Gig's history. Since the mid 70s, comedy acts have ranged from David Brenner and Henny Youngman to the likes of Jon Stewart and Jay Leno who have given comedic performances at this event. Sandra Bernhard also was a performer at the Big Gig as well as Lewis Black, who has become a very frequent performer at the event, appearing almost at every annual The Big Gig since in his very first appearance in the year 1991.
Many people have contributed in the growth of this fantastic festival. In `1984 Elizabeth "Bo" Black became the executive director, as well as a local celebrity due to her generous fundraisers. She departed in 2003, but her popularity is almost as recognizable as the The Big Gig smiley face logo. The live musical acts that are performed on the eleven stages take place from noon to midnight. This includes the Marcus Amphitheater. All the headlining acts of the event take place in this 23,000 capacity theater. The event itself has improved greatly over the years, with renovation on sight lines, sound as well as lighting. The increase in the size of the area has provided improved traffic flow in and out around the stage areas. New large video screens for magnification of images have also been added, thus providing with a better viewing of the performances as well as comfortable seating all around the lakefront.
