Wolfmother consisted of bassist Chirs Ross, Andrew Stockdale and Myles Heskett on drums when it was formed in 2000. Ian Peres, Vin Steele and Hamish Rosser were included later. The band started practicing extensively before performing live. They were contracted by Modular Recordings in 2004 after a few live performances which resulted in the release of the EP titled 'Wolfmother'. It ranked #35 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Stockdale played a huge role in its success by creating interesting guitar patterns for the songs.
Wolfmother recorded their first studio album titled 'Wolfmother' in 2005. They used the Cherokee studio to record and the album was produced by David Sardy. Before the album, Wolfmother released 'Mind's Eye/Woman' which took position #29 on the Single Chart. The album 'Wolfmother' was a huge success as it took position #3 on the album charts and was platinum certified five times. The album won the Australian Album of the Year award and the track 'Woman' from the album was made Single of the Year. Wolfmother also received the Best Breaktrough Artist award by ARIA Music Awards.
Wolfmother was featured in the readers' list of the Rolling Stone magazine including Best Tour, Best Rock Artist, Best Band, Artists of the Year, Top 10 Albums and Best New Artist. Andrew Stockdale took position #3 on the Best Dressed poll. Their second EP 'Dimensions' was released in 2006 which was followed by the release of 'Wolfmother' in the US and Europe. The album ranked high on most album charts.
Wolfmother's music has been included in the soundtracks of many famous video games, commercial and films. They have given music for games such asSaints Row 2, MotorStorm and NHL 07. They went on a series of international festival performances in 2006, headlining most of them. They performed at the Fuji Rock Festival, Rosklide Festival, Big Day Out, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Download Festival, Lowlands and V Festival. Wolfmother released the 'Joker and the Thief' during their concert break which took position #8 on Australian Single Charts. They won the Best Rock Album award and the Best Group award during this time.
The band went through a lineup change after some internal issues in the 2008-2009 periods. The lineup change was announced by manager John Watson and Chris Ross and Myles Haskett were the leaving members. The band performed as a four piece with new guitarist Aidan Nemeth for their live performances after their departure.
Work on a new album began in February 2009. They played their new song 'Back Round' on MTV Australia Awards. 'Back Round' was available for download free of cost. Triple J Radio played their new song 'New Moon Rising' on August 2009 which was exclusively released on radio. They supported the singles by performing live at the NRL Grand Final in 2009. After the departure of band members, Stockdale hired Hamish Rosser and Vin Steele and re-recorded the album that he was working on with them. He later announced that the album was going to be released titled 'Andrew Stockdale' and that Wolfmother was axed permanently. He did however state that the band would still perform their original songs but this time it would be under the name of Andrew Stockdale.
