As a news panel game show that comes on the radio every week, Wait Wait.Don't Tell Me is a favorite among listeners and live audiences. Known for being high on entertainment value, the show follows the format of a quiz show where the host, an official scorekeeper and a judge ask a limited number of panelists a variety of questions based on the past week's news. While it is a widely loved and listened-to radio show, the recordings for the show are held in front of a live crowd, and recent years have seen these live recording sessions became a huge hit among fans. Apart from that, the show enjoys a heavy international following through its broadcasts on National Public Radio Worldwide, and podcasts on the internet.
Created by Doug Berman, the show has been on air since 1998. The eminent columnist, actor, playwright and author, Peter Sagal, currently serves as the host of the show. In the past, guest hosts have included prominent TV personalities such as Drew Carey and Brian Unger. Apart from Sagal, the regular cast of Wait Wait. includes Carl Kasell who comes on board as the show's official judge and scorekeeper. In keeping with the tradition that the show has established over the years, the prize for the winner is a customized phone voicemail greeting recorded by Kasell himself. Apart from these two, the regular panelists include Charlie Pierce, Adam Felber and Amy Dickinson among others.
The hour long show is usually a collection of different games moderated by the host. Some of the famous and more commonly featured games are This Week's News, Lightning Fill-in-the-Blank, Who's Carl This Time, Extra! Extra!, Not My Job and Bluff the Listener.
This Week's News is a short filler game that allows Sagal to ask the participants some trivia regarding that week's news and the participants earn points based on their answers. Who's Carl This Time is a game where Carl reads out three lines that relate to a speaker. The panelist who guesses the correct answer gets the winning points. Over the years, variations of this game have included Kasell's Countdown and Kasell's Answering Machine. Extra! Extra! Involves three headlines out of which two are false and one is true. Winning points go to those who select the right headline. Not My Job is one of the most loved games on the show. The host asks various questions on a topic that is completely opposed to the actual profession of the panelist.
Some of the more famous personalities to have graced the show as panelists are the author Salman Rushdie, who took part in the Not My Job game and was quizzed on the history of candy. Another victim of the Not My Job segment was the US secretary of State Madeleine Albright who was asked about the Playboy magazine and its owner, Hugh Hefner. Highly acclaimed comedian and actor Steve Martin also joined the show for its live episode at the NYU Skirball performing arts center in New York City and won at the Not My Job game.
Over the years, the show has amassed a huge following. It has been critically acclaimed for its comedic value and its unique format which has, incidentally, resulted in various spoofs and rip-off programs. To date, it has won a Webby Award and a Peabody Award for its content.
While the show was a huge hit on the radio, 2005 marked its expansion as it started recording in front of live audiences. Since it is produced by Chicago Public Radio, the live recordings took place at the Chase Auditorium in Chicago. However, the show has now started touring all across America to give more people the chance to witness one of the most hilarious game shows out there. Those who want to catch a few laughs can now secure their chance to become part of the live recordings. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me tickets are now available for sale.
