One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Johnny Cash was a country singer who died in 2003, leaving behind a rich, unparalled legacy. Hailing from Kingsland, Arkansas, he was influenced by gospel music from an early age. He was a child prodigy who learned playing guitar from his mother and started writing songs while he was only twelve years old. He used to sing on a local radio station during his high school years. Years later, he came up with his debut album "My Mother's Hymn Book" which contained traditional gospel songs.
Cash's extensive discography is a true testament of his prolific recording career that lasted from 1954 to 2003. He debuted in 1957 with the release of his "With His Hot and Blue Guitar" on Sun Records. The album produced hit singles like "Folsom Prison Blues," "So Doggone Lonesome," "Cry! Cry! Cry!" and "I Walk the Line." This was the start of what turned out to be a phenomenally successful music career. His next album was "Sings the Songs That Made Him Famous" which was again a hit country album producing chart topping singles like "There You Go," "Big River," "Home of the Blues," "Train of Love" and "The Ways of a Woman in Love."
Before he released his third album, Cash left the Sun Records and signed up with Columbia Records. His first album produced by the new record label was "The Fabulous Johnny Cash" which produced number one country single "Don't Take Your Guns to Town." Columbia records would go on to produce a total of 55 studio albums for Cash, namely "Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash" in 1963, "I Walk the Line" in 1964, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash", "The World of Johnny Cash" in 1970 and more.
His famous releases in the late nineteenth century included "America IV: The Man Comes Around" which reached number two on the US Country Chart and "America V: A Hundred Highways," a posthumous album which peaked at number one on both the US Country Chart Albums and the Billboard 200. Two more posthumous albums by Cash reaching number three on the Billboard 200 were "America VI: Ain't No Grave" and "Out Among the Stars."
Cash released six live albums and 104 compilation albums on Columbia Records. His discography also boasts of eleven gospel albums and four Christmas albums. He is a winner of many prestigious awards including multiple Grammy Awards, CMA and AMA, ACM and many more. He is an inductee in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and few more.
