The Wallflowers were created by frontman Jakob Dylan and started out as by playing at clubs in Los Angeles. Their debut album was issued in 1992 through Virgin Records and sold forty thousand copies in its initial phase while it has been estimated that to date the record has sold about a million copies. The group's original lineup included Dylan on guitar and vocals, Rami Jaffee on vocals and keyboards, Peter Yanowitz on percussion and drums, and Barrie Maguire on vocals and bass guitar. The latter two left soon after the release of the album, and joined the band by Natalie Merchant. By May 1993, Dylan roommate and old friend, Greg Richling entered the band, and though he was not a part of the first album, he toured with the group, eventually gaining recognition as one among its original members.
Wallflowers seemed to have disappeared for some years, but returned with a thud on the main stage with their four-time platinum release in 1996 called Bringing Down the Horse, featuring hits like Three Marlenas, The Difference, One Headlight and Sixth Avenue Heartache. For this record, the group was joined by Jaffee and Richling while percussionist Mario Calire and guitarist Michael Ward were called in to create a new band. During this time, One Headlight climbed up to second place on Billboard American Hot 100 charts for Airplay, while the Sixth Avenue Heartache was spotted on number thirty-three on the same charts. At the 1998 Grammy Awards, the band won two categories for the One Headlight. 1997, the group was joined by Bruce Springsteen to perform the same song at MTV's Video Music Awards. During the same year, the song reached up to the fifth spot on MTV's video of the year, and became a number one on VH1.
Wallflowers have since released several albums. They released a greatest hits album in 2009 titled Collected: 1996-2005 that featured two new tracks. In 2007, they announced their first tour in two years, for which they played at clubs in Midwest and Northeast United States. Towards the end of the year, they were joined by Stuart Mathis as a replacement for Richling. The following year their lead singer, Dylan released his first ever solo album titled Seeing Things. In 2009, the group undertook another lengthy tour in support of their greatest hits album, and is soon to tour again. So make sure you book some Wallflowers tickets and are there to listen to their latest material.
