Obituary
Obituary is a name of a famous band, which is considered to be a pioneer for the death metal genre sort of music. The band was founded in the year of 1985 in the town of Tampa in Florida, and it had an earlier name of Xecutioner.
They had decided to change the name of the band to Obituary, only a short time before the release of their first album. It has a very specific and defined place in the Florida death metal movement, which was arisen in the late 1980s.
The second album, which was released in the year of 1990, named Cause of Death has been defined as a seminal album in the genre. Quite interestingly the vocalist John Tardy had been recognized as one of the first vocalists to use an abnormally low growl, which was an opposite of the general phenomenon.
Obituary has been placed by Nielsen Soundscan at the fifth best-selling position amongst the death metal bands of all time. There are more than 368,184 copies of it being sold. Even its 1992 release The End Complete has also more than 103,378 copies in the United States.
The band had been disbanded, right after 1997's Back from the Dead album, the reason was that it had become tired of touring all around. It was the time, when Donald Tardy had played in Andrew W.K.'s touring band.
At the same time, Allen West had focused on his two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under while not playing in Obituary. The other member named Trevor Peres had formed another band named Catastrophic in 2001.
The band had been re-united in the year of 2003, while Catastrophic kept its existence alongside the reformed Obituary. Obituary's first album after reunion was titled Frozen in Time, which was released in the year of 2005. The band's first live DVD, Frozen Alive, was released in January 2007.
Obituary has a basic contract with Candlelight Records for its seventh album Xecutioner's Return of 2007 and new EP Left to Die of 2008.
It is also reported by the official spokesman of the band that Obituary has been working on new material for their next album due out in 2009. There are some of the scandals, associated with Obituary, as its guitarist, Allen West, was recently imprisoned for the charge DUI and released in January 2008.
During his incarceration, Ralph Santolla served as West's replacement. It is uncertain at this time whether or not West will be returning to the band.
The 1989 hit album by the Obituary, titled Slowly We Rot, being their debut album, is still considered to be their heaviest, fastest and most brutal in general, by most of the critics.
It is unique in that it's the only album in which Obituary used standard tuning. All of Obituary's other albums use D tuning. The other album Cause Of Death of 1990 is considered as a landmark album in the history of death metal.
Its artwork was done by artist Michael Whelan, and it was reissued in. The End Complete, album by band in 1992 is its best selling, as it has been sold over 100,000 copies sold in the U.S. and more than 250,000 worldwide. It had also reached at #16 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.
