The NASCAR Nationwide Series: Dollar General 300 is the longest stock car race in the whole of the United States. It is a NASCAR Nationwide Series race, which takes place in Concord, North Carolina, at Charlotte Motorway Speedway, ever since 1982. In 1985, the race was extended to 400.5 miles, making it the longest race in the country. The figure of 300 signifies the distance in miles.
The race is sponsored by the Dollar General Corporation, which is a chain of over 9,000 variety stores, operated almost all over the United States. The Corporation has its headquarter in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. For many years now, the Corporation has sponsored motorsports, especially the NASCAR.
Located on 5555 Concord Parkway South, Concord, North Carolina, the Charlotte Motor Speedway is owned and operated by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Marcus G. Smith is the track president. It has a capacity to accommodate 140,000 car race fans. The Speedway opened its doors to lovers of car racing in 1960 and was built with an amount of $1.25 million. Curtis Turner and Bruton Smith were its architects. It has been known previously with names like Charlotte Motor Speedway from 1960-1998 and Lowe's Motor Speedway from 1998-2009. Ever since 2010, it has reacquired its present name, Charlotte Motor Speedway. Some of the major sporting events that take place on this Speedway are: INEX Raceceiver Legends Car Series, NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
The Speedway comprises of 2,000 acres of land and has multiple racing tracks, albeit of different kind and for different races. One of the tracks is a state of the art ¼ mile drag racing strip called ZMAX Dragway. This Dragway is one of a kind, with four-lane drag strip, all-concrete, and hosts NHRA events. It has an asphalt surface, which is located on 125 acres of land. The starting line tower has a press box, race control areas and 16 luxury suites. The tower itself is 34,000 square-feet. Its two grandstands can accommodate up to 30,000 race fans. Above the main grandstand are 24 luxury suites, which offer all the modern day luxuries.
Next to it, another state of the art clay oval is situated, which hosts dirt racing. It is 0.4 miles long. It has about 14,000 seats. World of Outlaws finals are hosted here, along with Monster Trucks, Sprint Cars, Modifieds, and Dirt Late Models. There is also a 1.5 miles Quad-oval track, which hosts NASCAR races. It, too, has asphalt surface with four turns. Its turns bank at 24 degrees, with straightaways banking at 5 degrees. The most famous and watched after race, the Sprint All-Star Race along with Memorial Day weekend race, the very prestigious Coca Cola 600 are held on this track.
Apart from playing host to abovementioned races, the Charlotte Motor Speedway also hosts one of the biggest car shows in America, the Food Lion Auto Fair. It is a popular tourist attraction and amateur race car drivers often visit this Speedway for car testing. Due to its grandeur, several movies and commercials have been shot here. Days of Thunder, a movie was filmed here, along with many others.
Some of the previous winners of Dollar General 300 have been, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Jeff Burton, Dave Blaney, Ryan Newman and many others. Keselowski, who was the winner in 2010, drove a Dodge at an average speed of 125.64 miles, finishing the race in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 16 seconds. He was given a grand prize of $57,400. Some of the other record holders of NASCAR Nationwide Series were Mark Martin in 1996, who drove at an average speed of 155.996 miles per hour, finishing the 300 miles in 1 hour, 55 minutes and 23 seconds and Jimmie Johnson in 2005, who drove at an average speed of 187.735 miles per hour.
