AMA Monster Energy Supercross: How It All Started
During the late 1960s, the popularity of motocross, hitherto a fringe sport, began to pick up in the United States. In 1971, NASCAR founder Bill France added a pro motocross race to the schedule of the Daytona Beach Bike Week. One year later, the Daytona International Speedway hosted the race on a track prepared on the grass between the pit lane and the main grandstand.
Another race was held in 1972 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Dubbed “Super Bowl of Motocross,” this was the event that led to the creation of the Supercross stadium circuit as the world knows it today. In fact, the term “Supercross” is actually a combination of Super Bowl and motocross.
Since that time, the modern Supercross stadium series has grown tremendously. A few schedule changes have also taken place over the years. The current season structure from January to May was adopted in 1998 with the campaign reaching its conclusion just before the beginning of the “outdoors” Lucas Oil Motocross Championship.
Competition Bracket
Taking place under the banner of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), the Monster Energy Supercross crowns champions in three categories. These include the 450cc, 250cc East and the 250cc West divisions. The season usually concludes with the final race, the Monster Energy Cup, taking place in Las Vegas at the Sam Boyd Stadium. To enjoy all of the action, get your AMA Monster Energy Supercross tickets at the earliest.
Competitors Hungry for Glory
Over the years, many great riders have competed on the Supercross circuit. These include the likes of Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Jeff Stanton and Bob Hannah among others. The current crop also features many talented riders such as the 2019 450cc Supercross champion Cooper Webb, the 2018 champ Jason Anderson, and three-time winner Ryan Dungey.
There is very little to separate the leaders during the current season. In the 450cc class, Justin Barcia leads the points-table with Adam Cianciarulo and defending champion Cooper Webb hot on his heels. Blake Baggett and Jason Anderson are also not too far behind. Come the Monster Energy Cup in May, any one of them could be crowned the new champion.
The East and West divisions of the 250cc class are also similarly close. Justin Cooper leads the field in the West followed by Dylan Ferrandis and Christian Craig in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Michael Mosiman and Austin Forkner complete the top five at the moment.
However, given the tough competition and quality of riders on the circuit, things could change after any one race. To enjoy all the exciting battles on the track, get your AMA Monster Energy Supercross tickets today.
