Mixed martial arts or MMA is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques. Fighters make use of the techniques from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions. Also are designed several rules that allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.
With the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, modern mixed martial arts competition emerged in American popular culture in 1993. These events were initially based on finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations. Modern Martial Arts featured competitors of various arts pitting against one another with minimal rules for safety.
The following decade broke the doors down for Mixed Martial Arts especially when MMA promoters adopted many additional rules which primarily brought into focus safety for competitors.
Several significant steps were taken to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport. Following these changes, Mixed Martial Arts events were organized at major spots and televised.
The sport saw increased popularity with pay per view reach rivaling boxing and professional wrestling. Releasing the popularity and growth of Mixed Martial Arts over the years, CBS Primetime made a significant deal to air Elite Xtreme Combat.
An entertainment and media art company, ProElite, Inc. is dedicated to promote mixed martial arts. ProElite is a CBS Corporation subsidiary and promotes live MMA events broadcast on Showtime and Showtime PPV.
It also operates a web portal, ProElite.com, with social networking for MMA fighters and fans and live streams of MMA bouts not broadcast on Showtime. Elite XC is at the focal point of ProElites live event promotions.
After running its first show in 2007, Elite XC quickly became one of the most visible brands in mixed martial arts in the country. On February 27, 2008, an agreement was made CBS will broadcast EliteXC shows on prime time.
Senior executive vice president of CBS Primetime, Kelly Kahl stated that Elite XC is an original programming for Saturday night and is live.
The live broadcast of mixed martial arts was expected to create an event-atmosphere. CBS, however, aired only three events in 2008, on May 31, July 26, and October 4.
In October 2008, numerous sources reported that Pro Elite is on the verge of bankruptcy, canceling the Elite CX event and ceasing operations effective immediately. The organization intends to promote mixed martial events once again starting in early 2009.
